Google Nexus 5 vs HTC One M8 – The Flagship Faceoff, 2014

In April this year, the HTC One M8 was finally launched into the market. This made it the first flagship Android phone of 2014.

As it has been mentioned in numerous reviews, the M8 is one of the most amazing Android devices to date. On the flip side, the Google Nexus 5 is also relatively new to the market and is also a favorite among many smartphone users. What makes it a choice amongst many is the great features it offers, at a cost most people can afford.  It has been said that the Nexus 5 is a competitor of the HTC One M8 smartphone.

Both phones offer different experiences, in terms of hardware and software features. Here is how they compare.

External Features and Build

Both the HTC One M8 and the Nexus 5 are Android devices with big screens and powerful hardware. However, these are completely different phones in terms of how they look. The M8 comes in a sporty, curve aluminum chassis wrapping around the sides of the display. On the other hand, the Nexus 5 is contained in a lightweight soft-touch plastic chassis. The HTC One M8 offers an in-hand feeling that is not found in any other phone. However, the Nexus 5 has its advantages too. The Nexus comes with flat sides and a matte texture that gives it a good hand grip. The use of plastic on the Nexus 5 makes it lighter than the M8. The Nexus 5 weighs 130g against the M8’s 160g. Reviews show that the metal chassis on the M8 can be slippery in the hand, more than plastic phones are. This means that the user has to be careful when handling the M8, more so when doing it with one hand.

The Display

When it comes to screen sizes, there is very little difference between the two phones. Both phones come with full HD resolution and are almost the same size. The HTC One M8 comes with a 5inch screen while the Nexus 5 comes with a 4.95 inch screen. Both of these screens make use of IPS panels which give them great contrast and viewing angles. Both phones offer highly impressive display for videos or texts with bright and vibrant colors.

Performance and Hardware

While the Nexus 5 has been in the market for longer than the HTC One M8, both phones are quite decent on performance. The Nexus 5 runs on a quad-core snapdragon 800, 2GB RAM, while the HTC One M8 runs on a snapdragon 801, which is the same as the processor in the Galaxy S5.

The HTC One M8 is slightly faster than the Nexus 5, which includes the speed of the Adreno 330 GPU, offering great graphics. The HTC One M8 also comes with a co-processor, which makes it different from the Nexus 5. This means that the HTC One M8 can do some things which are not possible on the Nexus 5.

The HTC one comes with two rear cameras that allow users to refocus photos after they have been taken. It is also possible to do more, when the phone is on sleep mode. The core processor also allows the M8 to monitor movements, which makes it a great activity tracker, without using the available battery power.

Software

Both phones run on the Android 4.4 KitKat. However, the Nexus 5 has an advantage over the M8 since it is a Google device; thus, it is the first, to get updates on the operating systems.

Price

The HTC One M8 is retailing at approx. $920 while the Nexus 5 retails at approx. $500. This makes the HTC One M8 a lot more expensive than the Nexus 5.
