WhatsApp was firstly introduced back in 2009 by two former employees of Yahoo!, Jan Koum and Brian Acton. In February 2014, WhatsApp Inc. was bought by Facebook for 19 billion dollars. Now, there are over 400 million people that are using this application and new users are getting it daily.
When sending text messages, images, video or audio files, you can also add your location by using the Google Maps and your device’s GPS to determine it. Another thing that you can do is to change the background image of the application with a custom image.
Even if WhatsApp doesn’t come with many features, you will surely be impressed by the ones it has. Even if the application doesn’t come with a calling feature, the developers announced that in a future version of the application, calling feature will be added.
WhatsApp works great with a 3G or Wi-Fi connection and it is compatible with most of the OS out there such as: Symbian, Android, Windows Phones, iOS or BlackBerry.
Likewise Apple’s iMessage or BlackBerry Messenger, WhatsApp will send you a notification when your message is delivered to the person you’ve sent it to. However, WhatsApp doesn’t have yet a PC version like Viber, one of its biggest competitors.
WhatsApp allows you to send messages to a group of people, but no more then 10 contacts, and you can also assign a title to the conversation. However, if someone from the group feels that (s)he doesn’t like the subject, s(he) will have an option to unsubscribe from the group conversation. Another feature that WhatsApp has it’s called “Broadcast message”. This feature allows you to send a message to multiple persons, but it will look like the message has been sent individually to each contact.
WhatsApp might not be as good as Viber for now, but we think that Facebook will find a way to catch-up the lost ground with the upcoming versions.
