Today, there are many new manufacturers who offer entry-level smartphones with solid specifications. Spice Mobiles is an India based manufacturer and Spice Stellar 509 is its entry-level smartphone released in May this year. It has one very attractive feature, as it is offered at a very reasonable price of $135 (Rs 7999). The phone comes in one single white color, but there is also a free flip cover with a leather finish. It is an easy to use phone with all useful features packed in it and offered at the best possible price.
Display
The Spice Stellar 509 comes with a display screen of 5 inches. It has a low FWVGA resolution at 854 x 480p. This comes to a very low pixel density of 196 ppi. It would have been better if the size of the screen had been brought down. Alternatively, Spice could have increased the resolution. The result of this resolution on this screen size is that the screen looks a little stretched out. The dimensions of the phone are 145.0 x 79.0 x 9.5 mm and its weight is 120g.
Camera
The best aspect of the Spice Stellar 509 is its camera. It comes with a rear camera of 8 MP, equipped with LED flash. The photographs taken in low light conditions are only mediocre. It comes with features like digital zoom, night vision and image capture. The resolution of the camera is 3264 x 2448p.
The mobile device also has a front camera of 2 MP resolution. This can provide the users with a reasonably good quality for video calls and for taking selfies. The camera specs are the accepted standard for an entry-level phone. It does not feature an autofocus, but most phones in this price segment do not sport such features.
The storage is also quite low at 4 GB. However, it can be expanded up to 32 GB with the use of a microSD card. Though this is the usual storage capacity seen in phones of this price range, storage can be a problem. You may not be able to store too many apps in such a smartphone. But one benefit is that the phone is able to support the migration of the applications to the micro SD card. This can be a saving feature.
Hardware and Battery
The smartphone makes use of a quad-core processor, which clocks at 1.3 GHz. There is no indication of the chipset that has been used for the phone. The device also offers a RAM of 1 GB. This is quite sufficient for multi tasking purposes and offers a reasonable performance, without creating too much of a clutter. The battery capacity is 2000 mAh and offers sufficient backup in case of regular or moderate usage.
The biggest disadvantage in the Spice Stellar 509 is its software. Whereas all the other competitors in this segment are running the latest Android 4.4 KitKat version, the Spice Stellar 509 sticks with the old 4.2 Android Jelly Bean version. There is also no word on any updates to the software at a later date.
All the usual connectivity features, such as Wi Fi, 3G and Bluetooth 4.0 are available. It also offers GPS support and a double SIM feature. It also comes with many pre loaded applications, such as Opera Mini, OLX and Spice Cloud.
Verdict
The Spice Stellar 509 has some good aspects, such as the Quad Core Chip, the battery of 2000 mAh and the big display size of the screen. However, the resolution of the screen display is very low. It is comparatively low-priced when comparing the competition in this segment. It is being exclusively launched by Homeshop18 and has the best and most stylish features in this segment.
