Surface Pro 2 vs Surface Pro 3 – Comparison of Price, Specs and Features

When Microsoft enters the world of tablets, it enters in style. Both Surface pro 2 and Surface pro 3 are extremely elegant, practical and powerful tablets.

And, designed especially for those who want a keypad as well, they can easily be transformed into laptops in a snap.

Display and Design

Surface pro tablets have the body of a tablet and the heart of a laptop. Microsoft advertises them as “the tablet that has it all” and rightfully so. These tablets are designed for the power user who doesn’t stand still.

Both tablets have 12 inches screen display, but the Surface pro 3 is slightly bigger with dimensions of 292 x 201 x 9.1 and weighting 800 grams. Surface 2 weighs 675 grams, with dimensions of 274 x 172 x 8.9. When it comes to screen resolution, Surface 3 is the winner as well, with resolution of 2160 x 1440 versus 1920 x 1080 pixels. The slight difference is not noticeable by the human eye, unless you put them side by side. However, the density is decent for a 12 inch tablet and they both support multitouch up to five fingers.

Hardware and Operating System

When it comes to power, these beauties are simply no match for anything else on the market. It is no secret that programmers and graphic designers use Surface as their flexible and mobile solution. Surface Pro 2 boasts a quad-core processor at 1.7 GHz with 2 GB RAM and runs smoothly and fast. With internal memory of 32/64GB it has enough storage to keep your files saved. Additionally, there is a slot for microSD card and USB v3. Surface Pro 3 most likely has more power than 80% of desktop computers in the world. You can purchase Pro 3 with i3 / i5 and i7 processor, with 4/8 GB RAM memory. You can store documents and files up to 64 GB and it has additional slot for microSD card.

Both devices run on Windows 8.1, smoothly and beautifully, with side by side applications. There is no limit on how many applications you can run at the same time, as the sheer power of the devices allows multitasking without any lag or delay.

Camera

Microsoft has gone a step further with the quality of the camera for their tablets. Pro 2 comes with two cameras, primary (rear) of 5 MP and secondary (front) of 3.5 MP. The rear camera can take snaps up to 2592 x 1936 pixels, while the secondary can record 1080p videos at 30fps. Pro 3 is even better. Packed with 2x 5 MP cameras (rear and front) it is an excellent tool for digital photography. The device comes with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, two excellent applications for image editing. And with the power it has, it certainly is smooth enough.

Battery

According to statistics and tests, both devices can run on maximum up to 9 hours.

Price

Basic version for Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro 3 start at $799.00, but Pro 3 gets more expensive when you get more features.
