Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini VS HTC Desire 816 – Top Specs and Price Comparison

The phones we are comparing today are the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini, produced by Samsung, and the HTC Desire 816. The Samsung handset has been recently released, as of August, but the other device, the HTC Desire 816, was sent out since May. The Galaxy S5 Mini is currently available only for select regions. Let’s take a closer look and see which one is more deserving of your money.

Display and Design

The Galaxy S5 Mini packs a 4.5 inch Super AMOLED display, with a maximum resolution of 720 x 1280 and the ppi pixel density for this device is of 326. Its opponent for today, the HTC Desire 816, has a much bigger display, measured at 5.5 inches and using the Super LCD2 technology. Although the screen size is bigger on the HTC handset, the resolution is the same as the Galaxy S5 Mini, and the ppi on the latter is significantly smaller, just 267.

The Galaxy S5 Mini takes design tips from its older brother, the Galaxy S4 Mini, which also features a dotted back cover. The edges of the device are covered by a fake metal band, being in some ways similar to the Galaxy S5. The HTC Desire 816 is made out of a polycarbonate plastic material, which gives it a glossy appearance, but the device falls short in terms of design, from the critically acclaimed HTC One M8.

The HTC phone is 0.31 inches thick and has 166 grams . The Galaxy S5 Mini is 0.36 inches, which is thicker than what the HTC has to offer, but in the same time weighs only 120 grams.

Specifications

Both devices have the same amount of RAM memory, namely 1.5 GB, and both devices host a quad core processor. Here is, however, where things start to differ. The processor inside the Galaxy S5 Mini is an Exynos 3 quad core processor clocked at 1.4 GHz, while the HTC processor is a 1.6 GHz quad core processing unit developed by Qualcomm, namely the Snapdragon 400.

Both devices come with Android 4.2 KitKat as their operating system, but neither of them run a pure stock version of Google’s software. Samsung has topped off the 4.2 Android with its personal TouchWiz user interface, while HTC is using its own interface over the stock Android, the HTC Sense UI. The HTC device has an internal memory of 8 GB, while Samsung steps up and implements 16 GB of internal storage space into the mix. The microSD card for the HTC, however, is capable of storing more, up to 128 GB, compared to the 64 GB of expandable memory offered by the Galaxy S5 Mini.

Camera and Battery

The HTC Desire 816 manages to come out victorious out of both these categories, with a superior camera and battery. The rear camera on the HTC Desire 816 has 13 MP, while the front facing lens is also  pretty big for its type, with 5 MP. The Galaxy S5 Mini, on the other hand, has only 8 MP on its rear facing camera, while the front facing shooter is even weaker, just 2.1 MP. Both devices have their cameras equipped with LED flash. Both devices also use Li-ion powered batteries, but, however, with different capacities, as the unit hosted by the HTC has 2600 mAh while the Galaxy S5 Mini battery has 2100 mAh.

Although the HTC Desire 816 seems to be on top, there are some features that come with the Galaxy S5 Mini and the HTC device lacks, that are worth mentioning. Starting off, the Galaxy S5 Mini comes with a fingerprint scanner and heart-rate monitor, and also is IP67 certified as dust and water resistant. The S5 Mini also features an Ultra Power Saving Mode, which can come in handy on long days when there’s no charging option in sight.

Price

On Amazon.com, you can get the S5 Mini for about $500, while HTC Desire 816 is around $375
