The Xperia SP is the successor of the Xperia S and Sony made a good job with this phone, making it even better in terms of specs. The phone was launched in April 2013 and it’s available three colors: white, black and red. The iPhone 4S is the successor of the famous iPhone 4, and it came to the market in October 2011, being available in white and black shades. But let’s see which one of these devices performs better.
Displays, designs and sizes
The Xperia SP is a stylish phone, being made of a high quality material. Its display is TFT and has the size of 4.6inches, which supports a resolution of 720x1280pixels. The pixel density is quite admirable, 319ppi, and it combines with the Mobile Bravia Engine 2 to offer you a much better user experience. The phone is measuring 130.6×67.1x10mm and it weights 155grams. The iPhone 4S has a smaller display – 3.5inches (LED-backlit IPS LCD) with a lower resolution – 640x960pixels, but it supports a higher pixel density – 330ppi. The aspect of the iPhone 4S is glossy, very elegant, but for a phone of its dimensions (115.2×58.6×9.3mm), it weight a bit too much – 140grams.
Hardware and OS
The Xperia SP comes with a 1.7GHz dual core Krait processor (Qualcomm MSM8960T Snapdragon chipset + Adreno 320 GPU), 1 GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage (expandable up to 32GB). It’s loaded with Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) OS, but you can upgrade it to the 4.4.4 (KitKat) version.
The iPhone 4S works fine with a 1GHz dual-core Cortex A9 processor (Apple A5 chipset + PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU), but it has only 512MB of RAM and three variants of internal storage: 8/16/32/64GB, which can’t be expanded. When it was launched, the iPhone 4S ran on the iOS 5, which was upgraded to the iOS 7.1.2 version, and it’s planned to be upgraded to the latest iOS 8 version.
Both of the smartphones have 8MP rear shooters with 3264x2448pixels, autofocus, LED flash and other mutual features such as geo tagging, touch face, HDR, panorama, face and smile detection and video recording capabilities at 1080p@30fps. Plus, they both have VGA secondary cameras.
Both of the models have non-removable batteries: the Xperia SP has a Li-Ion 2370mAh battery, which should allow up to 19 hour of talk time on 3G. The iPhone 4S’s Li-Po 1432mAh battery lasts 734 hours in stand by mode in 3G, and it allows only 8 hours of talk time on 3G.
The Xperia SP can be purchased from amazon.com at the price of 233 dollars. The iPhone 4S 16GB variant costs 345 dollars and the 32GB variant is almost 30 dollars more expensive.
