If you can’t afford to buy the Galaxy Tab 4 tablet, then you can buy one of its predecessors at half the price. The Tab 2 was released in 2012 and the Tab 3 came one year later with a few improvements. So, the cameras don’t excel, the screen resolution isn’t very high and the batteries don’t have an extremely long life. But these tablets are cheaper than a lot of smartphones, so don’t be too picky!
Displays and sizes
So, we have two older generations of Galaxy Tab tablets with the same screen size – 7inches, which supports the same resolution of 600×1024pixels. What changes brought the Tab 3 along with it? A TFT screen that replaces the IPS LCD screen on its predecessor.
The Galaxy Tab 2 is a little bit bigger, measuring 193.7×122.4×10.5mm and it felts heavy enough in your hands, since it weights 345grams. Its successor is almost 40grams lighter and it measures 188×111.1×9.9mm, being slightly slimmer.
Hardware and OS
The Galaxy Tab 2 is equipped with a dual core processor (clocked at 1GHz) which teams up with the TI OMAP 4430 chipset and it’s available in three variants of internal memories – 8 and 16GB expandable up to 32GB, plus a 32GB variant. The Tab 3 has also a dual core processor, but it’s clocked at 1.2GHz. This device has two variants of internal storage: 8 and 16GB, but they can be expanded up to 64GB.
Both of the Samsung tablets come with 1GB of RAM and run on the Android platform, but on different versions: the Tab 2 on the Ice Cream Sandwich version (which can be upgraded to the Jelly Bean version), while the Tab 3 comes loaded with the Jelly Bean version.
Cameras
Again, these devices share the same 3.15MP primary camera (autofocus) and the secondary cameras are VGA – on the Tab 2, and 1.3Mp on the Tab 3. Yeah, every new generation comes with improved specs.
Batteries
These tablets have non-removable Li-Ion batteries with the capacity of 4000 mAh. Nothing was changed here.
Prices
The Galaxy Tab 2 WiFi version still can be found on amazon.com at the price of 170 dollars. The Galaxy Tab 3 costs 160 dollars.
