iPhone 5S vs Samsung Galaxy S5 – Comparing the Two Flagship Devices

Are you an Android fan or a fan of the iPhone? The question seems to have haunted people since the last decade in the tech arena.

However, it is a defining question when it comes to determining the supremacy of either Apple or Samsung in the smartphone industry. These two platforms offer different approaches to the smartphone, each suiting a different set of users.

IPhone 5S from Apple Incorporated and the Galaxy S5 from Samsung Electronics are the best smartphones in the industry. However, to choose the one that is better of the two would require a comparison between their features and spec sheet. Let us find out.

Design

There is no comparison to Apple’s design. iPhone 5S comes in a metal and steel cased body offering finesse to the device. In comparison, Samsung Electronics has been using plastic in all its devices, including the Galaxy S5. However, the plastic body provides the S5 with more color options than the 5S of the Apple Inc.

The Galaxy S5 is a large phone as compared to the 5S from Apple. iPhone 5S has a smaller and harder body. The S5 comes with IP67 water and dust resistant feature that is absent in iPhone 5S.

Dimensions

iPhone 5S stands 123.8mm tall and 58.6mm in width. In comparison, the S5 has dimensions measuring 142mm in height and 72.5mm in width. The 5S is also a thin smartphone at 7.6mm than the 8.1mm thickness of the S5 smartphone. iPhone 5S is more than 30 grams lighter at 112 grams as compared to the 145 grams weight of the Galaxy S5 smartphone.

Both these smartphones are lighter as compared to their siblings and the slimmest smartphones around.

Features

  • Fingerprint scanner

Both these smartphones makes use of fingerprint scanners. However, both work in a different fashion.

The 5S makes use of TouchID scanner residing under the Home button whereas; the S5 has fingerprint scanner under the central select button.

The TouchID scanner works more or less every time as compared to the 50% success rate of the S5’s sensor.

  • Camera

The 16MP main camera of the S5 comes with higher resolution as compared to the 8MP main camera of the 5S. The Galaxy S5 has almost double the resolution of that of iPhone 5S.

The S5 provides good picture quality in bright as well as low lighting. In fact, both the devices offer good shots in low lights but the results of the S5 are more detailed and less noisy as compared to the noisy results of iPhone 5S.

CPU and RAM

iPhone 5S has a less powerful processor, that is dual core and half the RAM as compared to the quad core processor and twice the RAM of the Galaxy S5. iPhone 5S has a RAM of 1GB when compared to the 2GB RAM of the S5 smartphone. Moreover, the running speed of the processor of the 5S is 1.4GHz as compared to the clocked speed of 2.5GHz of the Galaxy S5.

However, the powerful iOS 7 operating system is generally more controlled and efficient than the Android operating system. The Apple A7 processor is based on 64-bit as compared to the Snapdragon 801 32-bit processor of the Galaxy S5.

Apparently, the 64-bit is faster than the 32-bit processor.

Storage and Verdict

iPhone 5S comes with three internal storage variants at 16, 32 and 64GB as compared to the 16 and 32Gb storage capacity variants of the Galaxy S5. The latter comes with an external memory card slot expandable up to 64GB.

Both the smartphones are equally respectable in their own arena. However, the price marks the major difference between the two devices.
