Surface Pro 3 vs MacBook Air 2014 – Specs and Price Comparison

The extremely appreciated Surface Pro 3 was launched by Microsoft on May 20. This tablet that can be used as a laptop, as well, will come in the US on June 20, while the Australians will be able to buy them starting from August 31. The MacBook Air has seen the sun light in April. This device is slimmer than the first MacBook Air and comes with the latest Intel Haswell chipset.

Displays and Dimensions

The size of these tablets’ displays are quite similar, but the Surface Pro 3 has a bigger screen of 12 inches and supports a resolution of 2,160×1,440pixels, while the MacBook Air (2014)’s screen is of 11.6 inches and it renders a lower resolution, of 1,366x768pixels.

In terms of dimensions, the Surface Pro 3 is measuring 11.5×7.93×0.36inches, being lighter than the MacBook Air (2014), because it weights 798grams, while the other is over 280grams heavier, and it measures 11.8×7.56×0.11inches.

Hardware and OS

The Surface Pro 3 is available in three variants of Intel Core processors: i3, i5 and i7, with 4 or 8GB of RAM. The device has also a TPM Chipset, and 64GB, 128GB, 256GB or 512GB of internal storage.

The MacBook Air (2014) has a 2.7 GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 Haswell 64-bit processor, 4GB of RAM and three variants of internal memories: 128GB, 256GB and 512GB.

While the Surface Pro 3 is running on the Windows 8.1 Pro, the MacBook Air (2014) is running on Mavericks, which is the latest version of OS X.

Cameras

The Surface Pro 3 has two cameras with the resolution of 5MP, while the MacBook Air (2014) has only a 720p front-facing camera.

Batteries

The MacBook Air 2014’s battery is a 38 W-h that can provides 9hours of battery life, which is the same duration of battery life in Surface Pro 3’s case, although we don’t know details about its battery.

Misc

Both gadgets come in silver shade, only that the MacBook Air comes with an integrated keyboard, which makes it a laptop. The Surface Pro 3 can be used as a tablet if you purchase a keyboard separately. Because it’s a tablet, the Surface Pro 3 supports touchscreen mechanism and comes with a Pen/Stylus, while the MacBook Air doesn’t come with this option.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 128GB variant costs on amazon.com 606 dollars, while the MacBook Air 2014 128GB variant can be purchased from pcmag.com at the price of 1045 dollars.
