There are many similarities between the Samsung Gear 2 and the Gear 2 Neo, as far as the specs are concerned. This makes it more difficult for the buyer to decide on one or the other. However, the Gear 2 Neo does offer a few upgrades from the original Gear.
Design
The Gear 2 is not much different from the Gear and comes with dimensions of 36.9 x 58.4 x 10.0 mm and weighs 68g. The Gear 2 Neo, on the other hand, has dimensions of 37.9 x 58.8 x 10.0 mm. However, the Neo is lighter at 55g; so this might make some difference to buyers. Another upgrade in the Gear 2 is the band, as users will be allowed to change the strap of the Gear 2. All of the new sensors have now moved to the top of the watch in the Gear 2 and in the Gear 2 Neo. This makes it possible to customize it without sticking to just one color, as was the case in the original Gear. However, the charging block is still present in both the watches, so you cannot connect the watch directly into a regular phone charger.
Camera Features
The camera is still the same as the original in case of the Gear 2. However, in case of the Gear 2 Neo, it has been shifted to the main head of the gear. The infrared blaster is an addition present in both the Gear 2 and the Gear 2 Neo. This feature enables the user to control the television or a DVD player merely by touching the feature on the watch.
Operating System
The new Gear 2 Neo will be running on the OS of Tizen and not Android. The Tizen operating system can easily port over the Android applications. The Gear 2 will also be able to offer a good backward compatibility.
Fitness Features
The Gear 2 and the Gear 2 Neo come with new fitness-based hardware. This includes an optical monitor for heart rate. This will enable a good control for fitness programs. You can also monitor running, walking, cycling, hiking etc. However, the device does not have GPS functionality. The device can also function as a standalone music-playing device while you run. You can also download a package for sleep and stress sensors.
Battery
The battery capacity of both the devices is 300 mAh. This is lower than the 315 mAh of the original Gear. You can probably get power for two to three days with one charge if you stick to the mode of reduced usage.
Verdict
There is no news regarding the price of the Gear 2 or the Gear 2 Neo, but the Neo is sure to be around 20% less than the Gear 2. Both of them will cost less than the original Gear. The new range of Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo offers plenty of new fitness abilities and brings the Gear a step forward. Both the devices are surely above the competition in the market among the smartwatches available. When comparing the two, it seems that the Gear 2 Neo would be a better option. It does not have the camera, which is pointless anyway. If you want a new smartwatch, the Gear 2 Neo is the way to go.
The major difference of the two devices from the original Gear is that it will be run on Tizen OS. The difference may not be visible on the front end of the device, but is more of a difference in the source code and the applications that are available. The time display is still present in both the devices, but you can add menus for accessing quickly.
