The enormous success for Samsung in the ‘phablet’ segment has been taken to another level following the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 in 2013.
Even though Samsung was originally the inventor of this segment, it seems that the company is not happy with the expansion that is happening in terms of features. Hence, it has created yet another revolution by becoming the first company to come out with a companion device for the Galaxy Note 3. It will be called the Samsung Galaxy Gear.
Support
The Galaxy Note 3 is one of the premium devices that will provide support to the Galaxy Gear. This is a small wearable wristwatch that houses a lot of information associated with the phone. Users will be able to not only know the time, but also several aspects like missed calls, messages, and apps. They will also be able to even look at aspects like email and so on. However, the Galaxy Gear will be supported only by a handful of devices. Even the Samsung Galaxy S3, which came out in 2012, does not support this device.
In many ways, the Galaxy Gear seems like it was designed to work along with the Galaxy Note 3. The company has managed to expand the things one can do with the S-Pen. It now supports a wide array of air command that can be used to take the functionality of a device to a new level.
Design
In terms of design, the Galaxy Note 3 comes with a premium feel that had been missing in most flagship Samsung phones up until now. Instead of plastic back, it now comes with faux leather. The premium feel also extends to the Galaxy Gear, which comes with brushed aluminum and high-quality material feel throughout the device.
Features
The biggest talking point of the Galaxy Gear is the 1.63 inch display, which utilizes the Super AMOLED display technology. It is one of the first wristwatches to come with such a large display. Most touchscreen displays have struggled against direct sunlight, but it is not the case with the Galaxy Gear due to its AMOLED technology. It features an 800 MHz processor designed to run all the apps and other necessary aspects.
Integration
Samsung has worked in such a way that the Galaxy Gear integrates seamlessly into the features of the Galaxy Note 3. Apart from providing basic functionalities like the ability to answer calls – using the inbuilt microphone and speaker, reading text messages, and looking into the call history, the Galaxy Note 3 can also be unlocked using the proximity sensor. The Galaxy Gear will also directly share any information such as the pictures taken using its 1.9 megapixel autofocus camera.
There is a dedicated app store for the Galaxy Gear itself. Even though it is still in its infancy, it already supports several useful apps to take advantage of the ‘wristwatch’. The apps can be installed on the 4 GB internal memory.
The Galaxy Gear is not sold along with the Galaxy Note 3. It is a separate accessory that costs around $ 500.
