The growth of tablets has been enormous, but this growth has largely been propelled by the popularity of the Apple iPad.
Samsung has been unable to make any strong foothold in the market, as it has done in the smartphone segment, because of the poor user experience offered on the original Galaxy Tab. Since the original came out, several replacements and upgrades have been released. The second-generation Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 came out in April 2012, and it was replaced by the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 in July 2013.
Design
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 offers substantial improvements in design compared to the previous generation. Even though it cannot match the iPad from its generation, in terms of thickness, it is fairly light at just 345 g. The device comes with a 7 inch display that does not offer much in terms of technologies like Super AMOLED, but provides multi-touch support. This capacitive screen offers a resolution of 600 x 1024 pixels. Since the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 did not feature an increase in screen size and came with the same 7 inch display, Samsung offers the same resolution in this device as well.
The bulkiness of the device has been substantially reduced by shaking off almost 50 g, while the thickness of the device has also been reduced to 9.9 mm from the previous generation’s 10.5 mm.
Memory
Despite being more than 12 months older than the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 offered a 32 GB internal memory variant to go along with the 8 GB and 16 GB options. This is in addition to the 32 GB that the device could support through microSD cards. Samsung improved this aspect of the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 by providing support of up to 64 GB memory cards. However, the 32 GB internal memory option was removed from the portfolio to sport a lower price.
Connectivity
Connectivity options are fairly similar, but the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 has a few additional features like DLNA, USB host, and the dual band Wi-Fi. Other aspects like Wi-Fi hotspot, Wi-Fi direct, Bluetooth 3.0, and USB support are all similar.
Camera
Samsung has not decided to make significant changes to the camera department – especially the rear camera. The 3.15 megapixel camera seen in the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 does its job in the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 as well. Ironically, the previous generation model came with additional aspects like smile detection. Both cameras come with support for 720p video recording. The biggest difference, though, comes in the use of the 1.3 megapixel front camera for the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0. The previous generation device had to do with only a VGA camera.
Performance has been increased slightly because of a better clock speed – 1.2 GHz dual core compared to the 1 GHz dual core – on the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0.
Remaining stocks of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 will be available for around $150, while the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 will cost around $170.
