Sony Xperia Z1 Compact vs Sony Xperia Z2 – Specifications and Pricing Comparison

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact and the Sony Xperia Z2 were released only a couple of months apart, but there are a lot of differences between the two phones that will help Sony regain its popularity in the higher-end of the smartphone segment.

The former is a smaller version of the Sony Xperia Z1, while the Xperia Z2 is the latest flagship of the company. It provides some much-needed upgrades over some of the features to make the Sony flagship competitive once again.

Design

The Xperia Z1 Compact and the Xperia Z2 are incredibly similar looking phones and it is not surprising to know that. The biggest differences between them will be in terms of size. Due to its much smaller 4.3 inch display, the Xperia Z1 Compact is visibly smaller and also easier to hold for people with smaller hands. The Xperia Z2, on the other hand, is meant to be the powerhouse in terms of multimedia capabilities and it offers significant real estate in terms of screen size.

Screen

The screen on the Xperia Z2 is almost a full 1 inch bigger than the screen on the Xperia Z1 Compact. The device is also thinner than the Compact at just 8.2 mm. Both devices employ the IPS panel, but that a marked difference in terms of the other numbers. The Xperia Z2 uses a 5.2 inch screen, which is an upgrade from the Xperia Z1’s screen. It also comes with a full HD resolution compared to the 720p resolution on the Xperia Z1 Compact. However, Sony uses technologies like the tri-luminous display in both phones.

Camera

This is a very important aspect of Xperia Z1 and the Xperia Z1 Compact. The two phones came with a powerful 20.7 MP camera, which also had a very large sensor that enabled it to take high-quality pictures even in lowlight conditions. The camera is retained in the Xperia Z2 – albeit with slight modifications. The Xperia Z1 came with the ability to shoot 4K videos.

This feature was missing in the Z1 Compact, but it makes a re-introduction in the Xperia Z2. Further, the current flagship model also has the ability to take super slow motion videos in 720p resolution at 120 frames per second.

The front facing camera has been slightly improved to a 2.2-megapixel unit from the 2-megapixel unit in the Z1 Compact. It is also capable of full HD video recording.

Performance

Perhaps, the biggest difference comes in the performance aspect because the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact uses a quad core 2.2 GHz processor from the snapdragon 800 range. The Xperia Z2 uses a similar quad core processor from the 801 range. It is also slightly powerful at 2.3 GHz capacity. The Xperia Z1 Compact came with the 4.3 version, which has since been upgraded to the 4.4 unit. The Xperia Z2 ships with the 4.4 by default.

Prices

The recently launched Xperia Z2 is priced at $ 700 while the Z1 Compact is available at $ 450.
