Some of the midrange smartphones have started the trend of supporting two SIM cards at once.
They not only offer this convenience, but also many of the features from the higher-end cousins. This was a remarkable shift from the trend a few years ago when mobile phones supporting dual SIM cards did not have such features. One of the first phones to start this trend has been the Samsung Galaxy S Duos. The replacement for this model has come out in the form of the Samsung Galaxy S Duos 2, while the Samsung Galaxy Core is also one such model.
Samsung has truly shown that they have understood the smartphone philosophy more than any other company in the market today. This has been applied in both the Galaxy S Duos 2 and the Galaxy Core. They are very similar in terms of the design philosophy, but the slightly sharp edges of the Galaxy Core make it differentiable from the Galaxy S Duos 2.
Screen Size
There is little separating the two phones since the Galaxy S Duos 2 offers a 4 inch display, while the Galaxy Core makes use of a 4.3 inch display. The resolution of 480 by 800 pixels mean that the roughly provide the same amount of resolution. Both do not employ fancy technologies like the AMOLED and IPS panel since they would have added to the cost of the device. Instead, they just provide a basic way to interact with the Android operating system.
Operating System
Both phones utilize the Android operating system. Given their superiority in power thanks to dual core processing units, they will be able to run close to the latest operating system version available. Since both phones come with less than 1 GB of RAM, it is unlikely that they may receive upgrades as to the Android 4.4 version. The TouchWiz user interface also is the latest in both these phones. This provides a lot of overlays to the operating system making it far more user-friendly.
One example is the provision of several shortcut settings button in the notification bar. Users can also adjust the brightness and other aspects from the notification bar itself.
Camera
Users of this segment will be more than satisfied with a decent camera that is capable of taking high quality pictures in daylight. Not much is expected from the phones when it comes to low light conditions. Hence, Samsung has provided both these products with a five megapixel camera. The feature list on the Galaxy S Duos 2 varies from that on the Galaxy Core. While the latter has features like face detection and smile detection, it misses out on the ability to record 720p videos.
It can only record 480p videos while the Galaxy S Duos 2 is capable of much better quality. Both phones have a front facing VGA camera only.
The factory unlocked version of the Galaxy S Duos 2 retails at $ 150 with the Galaxy Core around $ 190 for the same version.
