Samsung achieved supremacy in the high-end smartphone segment through its Galaxy and Note series of phones, but the same cannot be said of its presence in the tablet industry.
The Apple iPad continues to rule the segment with a strong market share. However, Samsung has been making inroads with several launches in this segment over the last 12 months. They have been targeted at various segments unlike the iPad, which comes in only two different versions.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 are both available in the market since July 2013. They are very close to each other in terms of specifications, but some subtle changes help make them compete in different segments.
The Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 appear extremely similar in the first instance, but differences start to appear upon a closer look. The former comes with an extremely thin bezel, which helps it accommodate an 8 inch display compared to the 7 inch unit in the Tab 3 7.0. It is also extremely thin compared to the Tab 3 7.0 since it has a minimum thickness of just 7.4 mm at its lowest point. The Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 comes in at around 9.9 mm.
Both devices are incredibly hard to separate in terms of weight, as they weigh in at just a shade over 300 g.
Resolution and Screen Size
The two devices may be separated by just 1 inch in terms of screen size, but Samsung has attempted to distinguish them both by offering a better resolution in the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0. It features a resolution of 800 x 1280 pixels rather than the 600 x 1024 pixels employed in the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0. As a result, it has a slightly better pixel density despite having a larger screen.
The major differences between the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 come in the processing department. The Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 does not only feature a slightly powerful dual core processor that is rated at 1.5 GHz – compared to the dual core 1.2 GHz, but it also offers a better graphics processing unit as well. Users will also be able to play with multi-tasking a little bit better thanks to its 1.5 GB of RAM. The Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, though, is not underequipped in this regard, as it comes with 1 GB of RAM.
Minor changes like the support for the latest version of Bluetooth 4.0 and the availability of gold color in addition to the white are some of the differences between the two devices. The Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 also comes with a slightly lower rated 4000 mAh battery compared to the 4450 mAh unit on the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0. They both come with support for external memory cards.
The Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 price in the United States is around $ 250 for the Wi-Fi only version, while the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 with equal specifications will come at around $ 180.
