In order for you to use Talkatone, you will have to have an iTunes account and install iTunes to your device.
Phone call making via fixed line telephones is facing stiff competition from the many app services that provide free calling. Talkatone is one such app and it offers users unlimited free texting and talk time hours. Talkatone uses Google Voice to enable voice calls and this means that you will have to log in to your Google account to make use of the free calling services.
User-Friendly Interface
Talkatone has a user-friendly interface making it easy to use. The interface has the normal contacts and keypad, along with Favorites and Recent menu. Users are also able to adjust the quality of calls and choose their network preferences. Talkatone also has some ads displayed at the bottom of the screen so users have to take care they do not accidentally tap on the ads unless they are interested. Luckily, users can hide the ads, but this upgrade will cost them.
Google Voice
Talkatone is great for those who use Google Voice. It is quick and easy to set up. Users can also receive or make phone calls without having a payment plan, when using their Google Voice phone number. These calls instead use your 3G or Wi-Fi data. This service comes in handy when you do not have Wi-Fi or any mobile service and would like to make a call.
Enabling Talkatone
You will have to go to Google Voice’s settings and check the “Forward calls to Google Chat” box. You can also check the “mobile” part as well – your calls will be redirected to your mobile phone.
The Setup
Go to App Store and download Talkatone into your smartphone. Once it has been downloaded, tap on it to open. As this app uses Google services to send texts and make calls, you will be required to sign in to your Google account. If you do not have one, you will have to sign-up for a Google account. Once you have done that, you will be able to see the people who use this app. These are the people you can call. Anyone in your contacts list using this app will have an ‘online in Gchat’ tag next to their name.
Using the App
If you would only like to see your friends on Google Talk, click on ‘Online’ then tap a specific name so that you can view their details. When you see a green box, then it means that that contact is online and you can start chatting with them. Alternatively, call their mobile phone by tapping on their displayed mobile number. There is, however, a downside to this. You can only call a person who has also enabled the Call feature from their Gail account. Talkatone also comes with many useful features and functionalities like the push notifications that alert you of incoming calls and many more.
Google has decided to stop supporting 3rd party apps, on their platform, from May 2014. This will affect the use of Talkatone on Google.
