iPhone 5S vs HTC One M8 – Comparison of Specs, Features and Price

Nowadays, you can safely say there is no bad smartphone.

Choosing the right one depends on few subtle differences, gimmicks here and there. But essentially, both iPhone 5S and HTC One M8 are devices worth investing in. No matter which one you choose, both are surefire quality options. In the end, it all comes down to preferences. We are going to try and compare them and leave the choice to you. Keep in mind that the iPhone is an older model (released in September 2013 vs March 2014 for HTC).

Display and Design

The first and major difference between these two phones is the size. HTC, like most Android phones, has a huge advantage (or disadvantage depending on your view) here. HTC boasts a large 5.0 inches display with 1080×1920 pixels or 441 pixels per inch. Apple’s iPhone has 4.0 inches display with a screen resolution of 640×1136, or density of 326. One M8 is a much bigger phone, or in numbers: 20% wider, 24% thicker and 18% longer. iPhone 5S feels light in hand, and is pocket friendly. HTC One, on the other hand, is massive and enormous phone, but that provides you with a much larger window for applications and media.

Both phones offer sharp screen. M8 is a bit sharper, and you can notice the difference if you put the phones side by side. However, when separated, both screens look extremely sharp. Dimensions of HTC are as following: 146.36 x 70.60 x 9.35. The iPhone’s dimensions are 123.80 x 58.60 x 7.60. Apple’s phone is also lighter as it weighs 112 grams vs 160 grams of One M8.

Hardware and Operating System

iPhone 5S comes with a A7 64-bit processor. Powered by 1.3GHz dual core and 1GB DDR3 RAM memory, the iPhone runs smoothly. The phone comes with the newest iOS7 operating system and options for 16/32/64 GB internal storage. Don’t let yourself be fooled by the “weak” processor. The iPhone is extremely fast, reliable and powerful phone.

However, HTC has an advantage here. Since it is a newer phone, One M8 comes with 2.5GHz quad-core processor and 2GB RAM. M8 is part of the quad-core generation smartphones. The phone has 16 GB internal storage, but with a slot for microSD, it can go up to 128 GB.

Camera

This is where preferences really come into play. While iPhone 5S has a more powerful camera of 8MP vs 4 Ultrapixels, M8 has some cool features. For example, HTC has a second rear camera, devoted to providing and sensing depth. What does that mean? Well, with One M8 you can take faux 3D effect pictures (images from different angles). Some other features include cartonizing pictures and adding blur to the background. The shots with 4 Ultrapixels won’t look as sharp, but you can notice that only when you zoom too much. Therefore, when you want straightforward camera for great shots, iPhone 5S is the way to go. Both phones have dual-LED flashes, making photos more colorful.

Battery

Battery life is not a problem with either phone. While the iPhone has just Li-Po 1570 mAh battery, its lower display consumes less energy. Expect your phone to last 2-3 days with normal usage. HTC has a 2600 mAh battery, providing a bit more life than the iPhone. Another feature of the One M8 is the power saving feature. The feature lets you limit your phone to very basic functions, but it provides you with extra hours of durability.

Price

M8 costs around $640, while 5S (16GB version) is around $480.

Conclusion

Both phones are extremely good. You can go either way. It all depends on your preferences. If you like a sleek phone that can fit in your pocket, you go the iPhone way. For those who want their phone to be more like a tablet, you can maximize your HTC.
