(JOPLIN, Mo.) An outside conservative group opened an office in Joplin early this week.

American Majority Action, a 501c4 organization, the action wing of the 501c3 non-profit American Majority, both based out of Virginia, opened offices in six different areas, two in Missouri. One in Joplin, and one in St. Louis.

Raz Shafer, field Director for Missouri for AMA, says southwest Missouri is vital statewide. “Conservaties here have to outweigh liberals in St. Louis, as well as over in Kansas City.”

He says, “a lot of times we don’t see conservatives being elected statewide because the turnout here in Joplin is not as high as it could be.”

Shafer says they’re endorsing Billy Long in the seventh congressional district, and Ed Martin in the fourth congressional district, but says his organization is not endorsing a Senate candidate.

“We decided as an execuitive decision from our organization that we wanted t focus on Congress,” he says. However, he says his group is “promoting conservative candidates up and down the ballot.”

Some republicans were worried that this would distract from the party’s efforts. The group is compiling survey information and volunteer information, that he says will be vital in the future for the Southwest Missouri Conservative Network.

“In future election cycles, they can use it to promote conservatives in the primary or the general election,” Shafer says. “We won’t rubberstamp the person because of the letter that’s next to their name.”

SWMO Conservative network leader John Putnam says AMA holds the same values his group holds.

“When they called and said they want to get some peopled own there to help get out the vote, and to help identify conservatives, I said, ‘well who am I to tell you no.’” Putnam says, “I’m trying to be helpful since they want to elect conservatives. That’s okay with me.”
