Nokia Lumia 1020 vs. Nokia Lumia 1520 – Hands-on Comparison of Camera Specifications

The Lumia series from the Finnish Company has laid emphasis on one thing – camera.

It would not be wrong to suggest that the Lumia series is all about camera specifications in a smartphone. Major smartphone manufacturers have been designing their smartphones with a notion to provide the masses with a good camera phone. Whether the Finnish Company has been able to accomplish it or not, is a good point to discuss.

However, today, we would put together the cameras of Lumia 1020 and that of the Lumia 1520 Windows Phones, to determine the difference between the two, apart from their 41MP and 20MP respective sensors.

Comparison of Camera Specs

Nokia Lumia 1020

Let us begin the review with the massive 41MP camera of the Lumia 1020 Windows Phone.

The Nokia 1020 comes with a 41MP PureView snapper, providing the users with best of both the worlds.

Technology: The Lumia 1020 comes equipped with a 1/1.5-inch sensor, which is large by smartphone standards. However, it is smaller than 808 PureView cameras, coming equipped with a 1/1.2-inch sensor. It implies that the pixel size on Lumia 1020 comes at 1.12µm, which is smaller than the 808 PureView smartphone.

Pixels are designed to collect light. Bigger pixels would collect more light, offering better results to the user. Where light is insufficient, bigger pixels would accumulate more light to offer great results in low light conditions. The Lumia 1020 camera has a disadvantage in terms of clicking pictures in low light situations.

Regardless, the smaller sensor of the Lumia 1020 comes with advantages such as OIS (optical image stabilization), providing the user with long exposures and decent low light shots and videos. The Lumia 1020 camera comes equipped with state of the art BSI (backside-illuminated) sensor.

Nokia Pro Cam: The Nokia Pro camera comes equipped with extensive controls and features, such as ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure and focus.

Nokia Smart Cam: The feature provides the user with cool shooting modes such as Best Shot, Perfect Shot, Emphasize Motion Shot, Action Shot and Remove Shot.

Nokia Lumia 1520

The Nokia Lumia 1520 comes equipped with a 20MP snapper, slightly protruding at the rear, implying the seriousness of the features it holds within. The camera consists of a 1/2.5-inch sensor, optical image stabilization and illuminated backlight. In terms of specifications, the Lumia 1520 comprises of a 6-element Zeiss Lens having an f/2.4 aperture with optical image stabilization.

Image Quality: In terms of image quality, the Lumia 1520 offers decent snaps, but cannot surpass the Lumia 1020 camera. The handset produces quality images when clicked outside in broad daylight, with ample details, vibrant colors and lively looking snaps. The dynamic range has been handled brilliantly, providing very less difference between the dark and light areas in the picture. Regardless, the picture exudes underexposed looks, but excels in macro shots. The clean blurring effect in the background produces a competent intensity of sharpness to the picture.

Video Recording: The Lumia 1520 handset is able to shoot videos at 1080p and 720p at 30fps, 25fps and 24fps. The handset produces soft details, which extensively softens the quality of the video. However, things do not get any better in low light conditions, as it caters the user with heavy noise, not helping the already soft details offered by the handset.
