iPhone 6 vs. Sony Xperia Z2 – Comparison of Dimensions, Screen Display and Camera

The iPhone 6 and the Sony Xperia Z2 are two smartphones released during different quarters of 2014.

While the Sony smartphone was launched as early as February, the iPhone 6 found its place among the public in September along with the iPhone 6 Plus. Both smartphones fall under the medium sized category and represent the candy bar form factor. The two smartphones also have their keypads incorporated as a part of their screen. Let us analyze the size, display and camera of these smartphones to help you get an insight of which smartphone can possibly meet your needs better.

Overall Dimensions and Weight

One of the first differences that you will definitely notice between the two smartphones, at the onset, is their casing materials. While the Sony smartphone encompasses a glass casing, the iPhone 6 proves that it is no different from the earlier iPhones, with its aluminum metal casing. Both smartphones have their volume control and lock/unlock keys positioned on their side. Although Apple’s smartphone is the biggest iPhone launched by the manufacturer so far, it is still slightly less short, wide and thick than Sony’s Xperia Z2. The iPhone 6 is also not as bulky as the Sony Xperia Z2. However, the Xperia Z2 comes with IP 58 certification that makes it dust and water resistant.

Verdict: The sleek design of the iPhone 6 makes it easy to hold as well as to put in the pocket. Additionally, the metal casing renders an elegant look to the smartphone. However, when practical aspects are concerned, the dust and water resistance characteristics of the Sony Xperia Z2 make it more advantageous to own this smartphone.

Screen Display

Even though Apple has introduced the iPhone 6 with a bigger 4.7-inch screen than before, it is without a doubt smaller than the 5.2-inch screen of the Xperia Z2. Both the smartphones encompass a proximity sensor, a light sensor and, scratch-resistant glass, which is also shatterproof, in case of the iPhone 6. In addition to these common features, the iPhone 6 also comprises an oleophobic coating over its RetinaHD display. Another common aspect is that the smartphones feature IPS LCD displays and render 16 million colors on their touch screens. However, the IPS LCD display of the iPhone 6 is LED-backlit. The Sony smartphone has a far better pixel resolution of 1080×1920 pixels and pixel density of 424ppi as against the 750×1334 pixel resolution and 326ppi pixel density of the iPhone 6.

Verdict: The bigger screen size of the Sony Xperia Z2 makes it a preferred choice over the iPhone 6 for activities such as Internet browsing, playing games and watching movies online. Moreover, the enhanced pixel resolution and pixel density renders sharper images.

Camera

Sony phones have always been known for their excellent quality cameras. So, how does Apple’s camera in the iPhone 6 compare with the camera in the Xperia Z2? The iPhone 6 features an improvised iSight rear 8-megapixel camera with 1.5 micron pixels combined with true tone dual LED flash and f/2.2 aperture size. On the other hand, the Sony smartphone boasts of a 20MP rear camera with LED flash and f/2.0 aperture. The Apple smartphone can record 1080p HD videos at 60 fps and 720 p HD videos at 240 fps. In comparison, the Sony smartphone is capable of recording videos in 4K format. Both rear cameras have some common attributes like geo-tagging, autofocus, face detection, panorama and digital zoom, burst mode and image stabilization. The Sony smartphone also has a 2.2 MP front-facing camera, while the iPhone 6 sports a 1.2MP front-facing FaceTime camera. The iPhone 6 has a dedicated camera button while the Sony Xperia Z2 does not.

Verdict: If you would like to shoot both photographs and videos at the same time, you could consider buying the iPhone 6. But for better clarity, sharpness and contrasts, nothing can beat the Xperia Z2 due to its dedicated image processor.
