iPhone 6 vs. LG G3 – Comparison of Dimensions, Screen Display and Camera

The iPhone 6 and the LG G3 are two major smartphone releases in 2014.

The LG G3 had already made its presence in the market, in May, by the time the iPhone 6 arrived in September, along with the iPhone 6 Plus that is the first phablet from Apple. With great expectations about the iPhone 6 even before its release, there have been many comparisons with other premier smartphones in the market. This article makes one such comparative study with LG G3, one of the latest high end smartphones launched by LG.

Design, Dimensions and Weight

Apple’s iPhone 6 is no different from its predecessors in terms of its casing. Both smartphones render a solid feel. However, the iPhone 6 features an aluminum metal casing while the LG G3 houses a plastic casing with a non-glossy finished that renders a brushed metal look. Another striking difference is that the iPhone 6 sports a flat back as against the curved back of the LG G3. In contrast, the iPhone 6 encompasses curved corners in comparison to the flat and sharper corners in the LG G3. Additionally, the keys in the iPhone 6 are positioned on the side while LG’s G3 smartphone has its keys on its back.

Even as Apple claims that its iPhone 6 is bigger than its earlier iPhone models, this phone is smaller than the LG G3 in terms of length, width and thickness. But it is worth noting that this difference is not much although it is noticeable when the smartphones are kept close to each other. However, the overall size difference has an impact on the weight of the two smartphones. The iPhone 6 is considerably lighter and less bulky by about 20 grams.

Verdict: The flat back and the smaller size of the iPhone 6 makes it easily fit in the hand, when compared to the LG G3. Also, the metal casing gives Apple’s smartphone a classier look.

Screen

The big size of the LG G3 plays its part in determining the size of the screen. Even though Apple has made its iPhone screen size bigger than before at 4.7 inches, the LG G3 sports a still larger 5.5 inch screen. While both smartphones feature the IPS LCD display technology and produce 16 million colors; the iPhone 6 additionally incorporates the RetinaHD display. In comparison, LG’s smartphone comes equipped with the QuadHD display. The LG G3 has a bigger pixel resolution and pixel density of 1440×2560 and 538ppi as against the 750×1334 pixel resolution and 326ppi in the iPhone 6. Both smartphones feature light and proximity sensors and come with an oleophobic coating. In addition, the iPhone 6’s display is made of scratch-resistant glass.

Verdict: The iPhone 6 has better viewing angles and brightness contrasts than the LG G3. With better brightness contrasts, the iPhone 6 is a good choice for taking outdoor shots. Although color accuracy is a bit offset in both the smartphones, Apple’s smartphone is capable of rendering better images in dim or poor lighting and at night, as well as portraying the colors to be as natural as possible.

Camera

The iPhone 6 features a revised 8-megapixel iSight rear camera with 1.5 micron pixels. On the other hand, the LG G3 sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with 1.1 micron pixels. While Apple’s smartphone uses a true tone flash, LG offers a dual tone flash for its smartphone. The LG smartphone’s sensor is smaller than the sensor in Apple’s smartphone. Its f/2.4 aperture sensor is also slower than the f/2.2 aperture sensor in the iPhone 6. The iPhone 6 can record 1080p video at varying speeds of 30fps and 60fps, as well as 720p videos at 240fps. However, the LG G3 can only record 1080p videos at 30fps. In addition, it can record excellent 4K ultra HD videos at 30fps which the iPhone 6 is not capable of doing. The panorama mode is also more advanced in the iPhone 6. The front secondary camera of the LG G3 is a 2.1-megapixel camera as against the 1.2-megapixel front FaceTime camera of the iPhone 6.

Verdict: Although equipped with lesser pixels, the Focus Pixels of iPhone 6 assist in faster phase detection for autofocus. This speed is enhanced in the LG G3 when compared to the previous models by using a laser-assisted system. While both cameras produce shots with rich and vivid colors, the indoor shots clicked using the iPhone 6’s camera are definitely clearer. Similarly, the panorama shots and 1080p videos recorded at 30fps are far better with the iPhone 6.
