iPhone 6 Plus vs Xiaomi Mi4 – Apple’s New Flagship Has Serious Competition

Although the newest device from Apple will have quite a rival list, featuring Samsung’s new flagship, the Galaxy Note 4, the Xperia Z3 or even the One M8 from HTC, competition may come from unexpected places. Here to interfere with the iPhone’s ascension to the top of the smartphone market is also the Xiaomi Mi4, a smartphone built by one of the most popular brands in China. The company is also nicknamed the “Apple of China”. The Xiaomi Mi4 came our back in August, whereas the Apple iPhone 6 Plus won’t be out until September 19.

In this article, we are putting Apple’s new handset to the test, against the promising Chinese smartphone. Let’s see which device came out as superior and why.

Design

The iPhone 6 Plus bears a very slim profile, measuring 58.1 x 77.8 x 7.1 mm. Available in color variations such as silver and gold, the new iPhone weighs 172 grams, which is understandable due to the premium build.

The Xiaomi Mi4 is smaller in size, measuring 139.2 x 68.5 x 8.9, but according to the measurements, it’s also thicker than the Apple device, and although it weighs less than the iPhone 6 Plus, only 149 grams, it still has a premium build featuring stainless steel, unlike its predecessor which opted for a polycarbonate chassis. The Mi4 is available in black and white.

Screen

This category is where the iPhone 6 Plus truly shines, with its huge 5.5 inch display, featuring the IPS LCD, LED-Backlit technology . The full HD screen provides a 401 ppi pixel density. Its Chinese competitor for today has a smaller screen, with only 5 inches, but a higher pixel density, with 441 ppi. The Mi4 also uses IPS LCD for its display.

Hardware

“Smooth” is the iPhone 6 Plus’ middle name, as its 64-bit A8 processor, clocked at 1.4 GHz, supported by the included 2 GB of RAM and the PowerVR GX6650 graphics processing unit will provide plenty of power for all your apps and games to  run unhindered. The M7 auxiliary processor has also been upgraded to an M8 chip, which helps users get information using the phone’s sensors, such as altitude and what not.

The iPhone 6 Plus will be available in multiple storage variants, such as 16, 64 and 128 GB models.

On the other hand, those getting the Xiaomi Mi4 will benefit from a 2.5 GHz quad core Krait 400 processor, namely the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801, paired with the Adreno 330 GPU and 3 GB of RAM. The device comes with 16 and 64 GB storage variants that can be expanded through a microSD card.

The newest iPhone model features an 8 MP camera on the rear that uses Apple’s iSight technology, and is capable of full HD video recording. The front facing camera has only 1.2 MP, but can shoot 720 p videos.

The Xiaomi Mi4 has a 13 MP shooter on the back, alongside its dual LED flash. The camera on the front is also impressive, with 8 full MP that can shoot full HD videos.

Software

There is a big difference in terms of software between these two devices, as the iPhone  Plus comes with Apple’s iOS 8 operating system, while Xiaomi packed their Mi4 device with Android 4.4.3, and topped it off with the MIUI 5.0 UI.

The NFC is a feature that the Xiomi Mi4 lacks, but the iPhone 6 Plus uses for mobile payments among others.

It is presumed that the 1810 mAh battery found in the iPhone 6 Plus will last at least 14 hours of talk time on 3G and 250 hours of standby time. The Mi4 is expected to produce 16 hours of talk time and 280 of standby time. Both batteries are non-removable.

Price

The Xiaomi Mi 4 will cost you $439 and $449 for the 16 and 32 GB version respectively.

The iPhone 6 Plus will set you back $299, $399 or $499 with a contract, boosting the price tag by $100 for each variant. The same pattern is applied for non-contract purchases, where the starting price, for the 16 GB version is $749.
