It is a foregone conclusion that HTC, Samsung and iPhone rule the roost in the smartphone space. The competition between these titans is fierce, to say the least. So which of the 3 companies’ latest devices is the best?
HTC One M8
This smartphone is a killer in terms of design having an exterior that is made of 90% metal. This, however, makes it slightly harder to grasp. It has a 5 inch display with a chassis that is a bit bigger. This makes reaching the top power button a hassle.
The headphone jack is at the phone’s bottom and the whole top of the phone is an IR blaster. So you can turn your TV off and on with an included app. This smartphone also has expandable storage of up to 128GB.
The One M8 has a dual 4 megapixels sensor at the back (dubbed the ultra pixel camera). It also has a True-tone LED flash and a secondary 2 megapixel depth camera used for various software effects.
As for the OS, it features the HTC Sense 6 on top of Android 4.4 making it more of an Android adjustment rather than a layer on top of it. As such, performance is top notch. This phone has a 2600mAh battery that gives you great battery life. The 16GB version of the HTC One M8 has a price tag of about $649 to $750 or £600.
Samsung Galaxy S5
The Galaxy S5 has 2.5Ghz Quad-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB RAM, LCE and 802.11AC Wi-Fi. Nothing insane under the hood, but this flagship phone is in the top tier. On the front, it has a 5.1 inch 1080p AMOLED display, making this phone a slightly bumped up version from the Galaxy S4. The S5 also uses the Android 4.4 KitKat OS.
The S5 has a plastic build; so it is a perforated back with dotted dimple texture similar to the Nexus 7. This phone is also IP67 water and dust resistant and also has a swappable 2800mAh battery. It comes in 4 colors – black, white, blue and gold.
The front button layout has the back, home and multi-tasking button. The home button has a fingerprint sensor and when it is set up, you can use it to log into secure apps and log into the phone.
The camera is a 2 megapixel front-facing camera and a 16 megapixel sensor with a dedicated image signal processor and super-fast burst mode among other amazing features. At the back of the phone, you will find the flash and a heart rate monitor (place your finger at the monitor, and it will read your heart rate). It also has TouchWiz that looks slightly toned down, and the new gear watch/fitness band looks hot. The S5 comes with a price tag of about $700-$750 or £600.
iPhone 5S
This smartphone comes in three different colors and runs the Apple iOS A7 64-bit chip. It has that familiar array of icons as other iPhone’s and is just as small, having a 4 inch display. It is made out of premium material like metal and is very tightly put together, so there is no creaking or twisting.
The glass back, however, makes it feel like it is delicate and would break when dropped. It has a 1570mAh battery, and it charges very quickly. Unfortunately, the battery does not last for long, but standby times are excellent.
It has speaker grills, two of them, at the bottom of the phone. However, it is just a single driver where the left grill is echoed on the right grill. This flagship has 1.3GHz Dual-Core processor, 1GB RAM, 32GB flash storage and 1650mAh battery. The price tag for the 16GB version is about £549 or $649, the 32GB version is about £629 or $749 and the 64GB version is about £709 or $849 off contract.
