Cameras on smartphone devices are getting better with each new smartphone release. The iPhone 5 and the HTC One M8 are some of the best Android devices available.
Even so, the camera in the HTC One M8 remains a controversial subject with its 4MP ultra pixel camera – it offers a different shooting experience by allowing more light, to pass through and also comes with interesting post-processing features, all at the expense of complete resolution. So, how exactly does it measure up to the iPhone 5Scamera?
Camera Specifications
The iPhone 5S comes with 8MP iSight rear camera with a resolution of 2448×3264 and a 1.5 micrometers pixel size, plus an f/2.2 aperture. On the other hand, the HTC One M8 comes with two rear cameras termed as the dup camera. The main lens of these two cameras comes with 4MP that offer a resolution of 1520×2688. The camera also has an ultra-pixel sensor that has an f/2.0 aperture and a 2.0 micrometers pixel size. The second camera is strictly for gathering data on depth.
Both phones come with BSI, which makes it possible for the sensor to capture more light than normal cameras can.
Pretty much like the predecessor, the HTC One M8 places less emphasis on megapixel count and instead focuses more on the quality and size of the pixel. This means that this phone, just like its predecessor, has the ability to take great photos under low light, but may struggle in bright lighting. There can also be issues with capturing motion shots. On the other hand, the iPhone 5S comes with a high megapixel count and a lower aperture. This makes it faster and gives it the ability to take brighter shots without the need to overexpose.
Consistency
Both phones offer consistency, when used with all settings in default. Also, they both run well on their respective operating systems. The iPhone 5S camera runs on the iOS 7 and comes with the Auto HDR enabled. The HTC One M8 runs on the Android 4.4.2 KitKat with the HTC sense 6.0 UI.
After taking photos with both phones, you will easily notice that the HTC One M8 has issues with handling bright light. Photos taken with the HTC One M8 look washed out. This is mostly caused by the large sensor and high aperture in the camera. In some cases, the HTC One M8 produces darker colors under bright light.
When observing a photo taken using the iPhone 5S, it has poor white balance unlike the m8. However, the iPhone is much more consistent when it comes to producing well lit images. The HTC struggles a lot in bright light settings, which is very noticeable.
In this case, the iPhone 5S is the better phone.
Capturing Motion
Without using any extra features, the iPhone 5s produces clearer and more eye catching pictures than the HTC One M8. Both phones seem to struggle under low light when it comes to shooting motion, but the iPhone 5 fares better. Even so, it is worth mentioning that the HTC One M8 has the ability to capture 12fps shots while the iPhone captures a mere 10fps.
In capturing motion, the iPhone 5s does a more commendable job than the HTC One M8.
