Sony Xperia Z2 vs iPhone 5S – Compare Specs, Features and Price

With Xperia Z2, Sony entered the market of premium, high end smartphones.

The intention is to challenge not only other Android based devices in the class, but Apple’s devices as well. However, let’s compare them and help you make a decision which one to purchase.

Design and Display

Very rarely an Android based smartphone can compare to the luxurious and premium design of an iPhone. Xperia Z2 is one of those devices. Glass and metal are the premium building blocks of the handset, and the phone feels very stylish in the hand. However, the iPhone is slightly thinner, and will always have advantages in aesthetics over Android based phones. Sony took a step forward with the display of Z2, switching to ISP technology. The result is visible, as the colors on the screen are more vivid and livelier. Z2 boasts a screen size of 5.2 inches, with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and 424ppi. Compared to iPhone 5S and its screen resolution of 640 x 1136 pixels and 326ppi, Z2 looks superior. However, iPhone 5S still manages to produce more accurate colors. One downside is that Sony’s phone is slightly heavier, and feels heavy in the hand as well. Z2 weighs 163 grams, a lot more than 5S (112 grams). If you base your decision solely on size, Z2 is your choice, but iPhone 5S offers better quality. iPhone 5S comes in gold, silver and spray gray color, while Z2 comes in white, black and purple.

Hardware and Operating System

Equipped with 64-bit processor (dual core 1.3GHz and 1GB RAM memory), iPhone 5S has far more powerful technology than Android phones. However, Z2 can compete with its own Snapdragon 801, quad core processor at 2.3GHz and 3GB RAM memory. Both devices offer top end performance in terms of speed. When it comes to internal storage, iPhone 5S offers more, as it comes in 16/32/64 GB versions. Z2 can offer only a 16 GB version, but the memory can be increased with a microSD slot for additional 64 GB. Apple still hasn’t produced a device with expandable storage.

iPhone 5S comes with iOS7, an operating system that is a bit different than the previous one. Multitasking is improved, and the application store (iTunes) has high quality apps. iOS7 has the advantage of simplicity, while Android is more open operating system. Z2 runs on 4.4 KitKat, and has its own user interface. The interface is clean, easy to use and comes with decent wallpapers and widgets.

Camera

Sony’s camera is a force to be reckoned with. Z2 boasts 20.7 MP rear camera which can shoot in slow motion and HDR, and record videos with 4k resolution (2160p). Apple’s phone, even though has only 8 MP rear camera, still can compete, and takes great photos and videos in different conditions.

Battery

Z2 has a battery capacity of 3200 mAh, while iPhone 5S is equipped with Li-Po 1570 mAh battery. The difference looks enormous at first glance, but Apple has managed to make handsets durable for several days. And Z2 has a larger screen to power up, requiring more battery capacity.

Price

The cheapest iPhone 5S version (16GB), costs around $900. The price for Z2 is around $800, making it slightly cheaper.
