Sony Xperia Z1 vs Sony Xperia Z1 Compact – A Pocket Friendly Option

Sony has brought in a complete Xperia line up with the Sony Xperia Z1, the Z1 compact and the Xperia Z Ultra, in its bid to take on all shapes and sizes in the market. The Z1 compact is the baby of the lot, so here’s a comparison to show you which handset would be best for you.

The Sony Xperia Z1 was released in September 2013, whereas the Z1 Compact came in January, 2014. Though both the devices are strikingly similar in many ways, their screen size sets them apart. The Xperia Z1 can be bought for around $460, whereas the Xperia Z1 Compact comes at around the same price of about $440.

Design Comparison

The Xperia Z1 comes with dimensions of 144.4 x 73.9 x 8.5 mm frame, whereas the Z1 Compact, as the name suggests, is much smaller at 127 x 64.9 x 95 mm. The design is the same, with a black front glass that is surrounded by a metallic band and a glass back.

Both are available in black and in white with the Z1 also available in purple color. The Compact is also available in green and in pink. Both can be used easily with one hand and can be held comfortably. The devices also come with IP58 certification, offering dust and water resistance.

Display

The Z1 has a screen display of 5 inches compared to the smaller 4.3 inch screen of the Compact. Both are comfortable for watching videos. The Xperia Z1 comes with a resolution of 1080 x 1920p full HD and offers a ppi of 441 with images and text being really crisp. However, the Z1 Compact does not have the full HD feature.

The Compact has an HD 720 (720 x 1280p) screen and offers a ppi of 342. One advantage with the Compact is that you can use the screen even if you are wearing gloves. This is very useful for using the phone in colder climates.

Camera

The biggest advantage of both the devices is that they are fitted with a camera having a massive Exmor sensor of 20.7 MP. The application is also very intuitive and has many lavish features. It can broadcast pictures live on the social media and also take enhanced reality pictures.

The auto mode in both the devices is superior, but professionals can also use the manual mode settings, where they can toggle with several exposures, white balances and scenes. You can take creative shots with image effects. Color reproduction is also good on both the devices.

Performance

The two devices run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Processor with a quad core CPU, which clocks at 2.2 GHz. They also come with a RAM of 2 GB and a GPU of Adreno 330. Speed is good in both the devices, though the Z1 Compact does seem a little faster due to the lower strain on the GPU.

Internal storage is also similar and the devices come with a 16 GB internal storage, which can be expanded to 64GB using the micro SD slot.

Verdict

The decision regarding which device is better will largely depend on the screen size that you prefer. The Z1 is surely suitable for those looking out for a good design and a device with a great camera. The 5-inch screen on the Z1 is enough for watching movies and the screen is sharp for text.

However, if you are looking for something smaller with powerful insides, the Compact is the logical option. It takes all the superb features of the Z1 and puts it in a more pocket size and compact frame. The Compact is also very inconspicuous and is a great replacement for the conventional camera.
