Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 – Prices, Features and Specifications Comparison

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 are two tablets launched by Samsung for small budget users.

While Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 was launched in 2012, Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 followed suit, very soon after, in 2013. Although there are some exactly identical features in both the tablets, there are some interesting and yet important differences between them. Although not ranked among the expensive tablets launched by Samsung, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 tablet is priced more than its predecessor. Both tablets function on the Android operating system. Read on for a comparative analysis on both the averagely priced smartphones, to help you identify, which tablet you must consider owning.

Dimensions and Weight

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 tablet is on the whole, visibly smaller and more compact, than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. Apart from the dimensions aspect, it is also less bulky in the pocket. Moreover, Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 presents an enhanced look that gives it a sophisticated feel and better visual appeal over the previously launched tablet.

Verdict: There is no doubt that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 takes the icing on the cake with respect to its overall size and weight. The compact size makes it easier to handle, than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 tablet.

Screen Display

Irrespective of the difference in their sizes, it may be interesting to note that both the tablets share the same screen size. While they portray a screen size of seven inches each, there is a difference in the screen display technology incorporated in them. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 features a Super PLS IPS LCD display technology as against the TFT display technology that is used in Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0. The PLS IPS display produces a wider viewing angle. However, there is no difference in the number of colors rendered, pixel resolution and pixel density in the two tablets. Each of the Samsung tablets renders 16 million colors with 1024×600 pixel resolution and 169 to 170ppi.

Verdict: The two tablets are on par, as far as the display quality is considered, which is rated as good. However, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 gains a marginally better score with respect to the viewing angle feature.

Camera

Both the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 tablets encompass a primary rear-facing 3MP camera that can also be used for recording videos apart from taking photographs. The cameras also encompass some common features such as smile detection, geo tagging, exposure compensation and panorama. Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 sports a secondary front-facing VGA camera that has been enhanced in Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 which features a 1.3 megapixel camera.

Verdict: While both the Samsung Galaxy tablets score equally with respect to the functionality of their primary cameras, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 would be an ideal choice with its upgraded secondary camera if you want to shoot a lot of selfies or engage yourself in video chats.

Hardware Configuration (CPU Processor and RAM)

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 tablets comprise a dual-core processor each. However, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 tablet has a Krait 300 processor with a slightly better clocking frequency of 1.2GHz while the clocking frequency of the Samsung Galaxy Tab is 1GHz. The tablets also have the same inbuilt RAM of 1GB each.

Verdict: Although the clocking frequency of Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 is marginally better than that of Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, there is no marked difference in the speed of operation in the two tablets. Hence neither tablet really gains an upper hand over the other in this regard.

Operating System Software

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 comes preloaded with Ice Cream Sandwich as its operating system that you can upgrade to Jelly Bean if you wish to do so. Additionally, this tablet incorporates the TouchWiz or Live Panel UX UI. However, Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 is already preloaded with the Jelly Bean operating system.

Verdict: Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 featuring the TouchWiz UI skin is relatively a better choice as it helps in customizing the contents of the screen and making it more user-friendly.

Internal Storage and Expansion of Memory

With respect to internal storage, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 tablet is available in three options – 8GB, 16GB and 32GB. However, there are only two internal memory capacity options in Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 – 8GB and 16GB. Both tablets are designed with a memory card slot that can accommodate a microSD or a microSDHC type memory card for expanding memory. While the memory in Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 can be expanded to a maximum of 32GB, more expansion is possible in case of Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 as it can accommodate a memory card of maximum memory of 64GB.

Verdict: If you want to store a large number of pictures and media files, then the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 tablet would be ideal as it can offer memory when the combined internal memory and expandable memory are taken into account.

Battery Life

There is no difference in the type of battery used or battery capacity with respect to both the tablets. The Samsung Galaxy tablets encompass a non-removable Lithium ion battery with a capacity of 4,000 mAh. On full charge, the tablets render talk time of up to 40 hours on 2G and up to 20 hours on 3G.

Verdict: The tablets win equal points with respect to battery life and neither tablet can be declared a winner in this regard.

Connectivity Options

Just like the battery life feature, the range of connectivity options in both the tablets is exactly the same. In either case, you are offered a horde of connectivity options such as EDGE, Wi-Fi, GPRS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct, USB port and Wi-Fi hotspot.

Overall, when both the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 budget tablets are considered, there is actually nothing really impressive or spectacular that the latter tablet has to provide for the extra amount you pay. In other words, there is hardly any compelling feature that calls for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 tablet users to consider upgrading their tablet.
