Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Sony Xperia Z2 – Comparison of Features and Specifications

Both Samsung Galaxy S5 and Sony Xperia Z2 are among the top listed Android phones in the year 2014, and are fairly highly priced.

They are also more or less of the same size. Each of these smartphones has its own distinct features and advantages that help it score over the other.

Design

The Galaxy S5 primarily has a plastic casing, as against the glass and aluminum combined casing in Sony Xperia Z2. While the Galaxy S5 features a plastic dimpled rear and is available in four colors, the Sony Xperia Z2 is water resistant with a consistent finish, and is obtainable in three colors. The Galaxy S5, with its curved corners, is very slightly smaller and lighter than the Sony Xperia Z2. This makes it easier to hold the Galaxy S5 smartphone.

Water Resistance

The Sony Xperia Z2 offers better water resistance when compared to the Samsung Galaxy S5. Although a rubber seal in each phone prevents water and dust from entering it, the location of the seal due to the construction difference makes the difference. In Galaxy S5, the removable battery cover and the USB port are covered by a rubber strip and a rubber flap respectively. However, the battery cover design is such that there is still a chance for some dirt to find its way in. As far as the Xperia Z2 is concerned, the rear is non-removable and covered fully. The only open spaces are the charging port and the SIM insertion slot. The sockets for the headphone jacks are sealed completely in both the smartphones.

Screen Size and Display

With respect to screen size and resolution, both the smartphones are at par. The 5.1-inch screen Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone is just slightly smaller than the Sony Xperia Z2 which does not make any real difference. They also share the same 1080p resolution. But, the key difference lies in their display technologies. The Super AMOLED display of the Galaxy S5 renders better deep-looking black and larger-than-life colors than the Triluminous LCD display of the Xperia Z2.

CPU, RAM and Performance

Once again, both the smartphones seem to be at the same level in this regard, with the Snapdragon 801 quad-core CPU. Even though the Galaxy S5 has a slightly higher clocking frequency, the Xperia Z2 scores in terms of the RAM capacity. The Xperia Z2 encompasses a 3GB RAM as against the 2GB RAM in Galaxy S5. Yet, like the clocking frequency, this will not affect the daily performance of the phone. However, in the long run, the Galaxy S5 tends to slow down and requires a lot of free storage space for optimal performance. Also, the Xperia Z2 has a lighter and easier to handle interface. These aspects rank the Sony Xperia Z2 a little ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Camera

The 16-megapixel ISOCELL camera with an LED flash and aperture of f/2.2 gives the Galaxy S5 a leading edge over the 20.7-megapixel sensor, LED flash and f/2.0 of Xperia Z2. With both phones featuring two of the best resolution sensors, HDR images are better defined in Galaxy S5. However, low light shots come out well in both the cameras. Additionally, the Xperia Z2 camera has lots of fun modes and creative filters that are worth exploring.

If you want a smartphone that looks as expensive as the amount you pay for it, then you must consider going in for the Sony Xperia Z2. Also, its software is known to be more reliable than that of the Samsung Galaxy S5. However, if screen and camera are two factors that you would consider, then the Samsung Galaxy S5 is the right choice for you.
