Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 – Full Specs and Features

Samsung’s new wearable collection comes in the form of Gear 2.

The smartwatch comes with a plethora of features that are arguably the best in the market. However, the question to ponder upon is whether the Gear 2 has what it takes to woo the potential users to make them wear the smartwatch.

Chassis

The smartwatch features a similar look as that of the original Gear, which was released in 2013. However, the Gear 2 features a smaller and slimmer look, along with an artificial leather plastic strap, providing the user with a proper digital watch feeling. In comparison to its predecessor, the Gear 2 appears more alluring. However, the smartwatch still carries a chunk on it, more than a normal wristwatch. The Gear 2 comes at a weight of 68 grams, which is 5 grams lighter as compared to the original Gear smartwatch. The Gear 2 comes with IP67 certification, enabling the device to be submerged up to one meter of fresh water, for up to half an hour without causing any damage to the smartwatch.

Operation

The Gear 2 comes equipped with Samsung’s own Tizen operating system, which the company favors over the Android operating system. The company claims that the Tizen OS aims to optimize battery life of the smartwatch. The Gear 2 comes with a tad smaller battery that would offer users with three days of battery life, without the need to charge the smartwatch.

The Gear 2 comes equipped with 1.6-inch Super AMOLED display, similar to that of its predecessor. The screen comes with a resolution of 320×320 pixels, offering the user a pixel density of 278-ppi. The sound quality is good, but you would not want to use it in heavy traffic. The microphone offers audible sound to callers, but when held lower than the chest, it tends to distort the sound.

The Gear 2 comes with a Heart Rate Sensor, with options such as to track your walking, running and cycling activities.

Features

The Gear 2 comes with a dual core processor, which runs at a speed of 1GHz. The processor is coupled with a RAM of 512MB. The Gear 2 is decently quick to open apps.

The 2MP camera, as compared to the 1.9MP of its predecessor is a definite up in terms of features. Located on the edge of the device, it is practically quick to open and focus. However, the picture quality may not be that great on the Gear 2 smartwatch, but you can record 720p High Definition video at 30fps.

The Gear 2 features a 4GB internal memory, enough for storing music files and pictures. The smartwatch is not required to be paired with a smartphone. However, if you do, you would get a lot more out of the smartwatch. The Gear 2 can be paired with 17 various models from the Samsung family.

Verdict

The Gear 2 smartwatch leads in terms of design, features and specs in comparison to its predecessor, the original Gear smartwatch. The Gear 2 is lighter, slimmer, and has a faster camera and better battery life due to use of Samsung’s Tizen operating system.
