In this article we’re comparing two big sized tablets: Samsung&Google’s Nexus 10 with HP’s Slate 10 HD, which were released last fall. The first device managed to steal some of iPad 4’s fans, although its biggest advantage isn’t the design. In this battle, we pick it as a winner, but the HP device isn’t bad either.
Displays and sizes
The Nexus 10 has actually a 10.1inches, which is Super PLS TFT with a resolution of 2560x1600pixels and 299ppi. The screen is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 2, the dimensions of the device are 263.9×177.6×8.9mm and it weights 603grams. The appearance isn’t extremely appealing, considering that it has a rubber body which isn’t eye catchy like other metal bodied competitors.
The Slate 10 has a 10inches display with half the resolution of Nexus 10’s, and it supports only 151ppi. The back is made of rear perforated plastic and it looks kind of cheap. On its edges you’ll find the power and volume buttons, the speakers are located at the bottom and this wasn’t one of the most inspired decisions. The device is heavier, weighting 626grams and its dimensions are 259x178x9.7 mm.
Hardware and OS
The Nexus 10 is powered by a more powerful processor, which is dual core Cortex A15 with a clock speed of 1.7GHz. The chipset is Exynos 5250 and the GPU is Mali-T604. The Ram capacity is 2GB and the internal storage is available in two variants: 16 and 32GB, but the device doesn’t support microSD card slots for expansion. It runs on Android platform and comes initially with v4.2 (Jelly Bean), but you can upgrade the OS to v4.4.2 (KitKat).
The Slate 10 has a dual core 1.2GHz processor running on a Marvell PXA986 chipset with 1GB of RAM. The operating system is Android v4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) and the internal memory is 16GB, expandable up to 32GB.
Both tablets have modest rear cameras with the resolution of 5MP and they have in common autofocus. But the Nexus 10 has in addition LED flash, touch focus, geo tagging and face detection. Its secondary battery is 1.9MP, while the Slate 10 has a 2MP front camera which records at 720p.
Although both batteries are non removable and Li-Po, the Nexus 10’s battery has a higher capacity, of 9000mAh, while the Slate 10 has a 7000mAh power.
The 16GB variant of the Nexus 10 costs 549 dollars and the Slate 10 tablet is priced at 300 dollars. These devices can be purchased from amazon.com.
