Launched just under a year ago, the Apple iPad Mini 2 has been a revelation.
Apple’s decision to come out with a second-generation iPad Mini shows the immense success and popularity of the previous generation. It also puts a lot of pressure, since the new device has to be even better. The specifications list of the iPad Mini 2 reveals a monster within and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 will be one of the devices it will be competing against.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 is a tablet that can offer a 10.1 inch display in the same price bracket as the iPad Mini 2, if not cheaper. The iPad Mini 2 will offer only a 7.9 inch display. The significant difference in display size also makes a telling contribution in terms of pixel density. This is partly because the iPad Mini 2 offers the superior retina display resolution, which effectively means closer to 330 PPI in pixel density. The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, in contrast, offers a disappointing 1280 x 800 pixels in resolution. This means lesser than 150 PPI.
The iPad Mini 2 cements its reputation as an excellent multimedia device, by offering a range of internal memory options. Starting from just 16 GB, one can customize the iPad Mini 2 with a maximum possible 128 GB of internal storage. Since the device does not come with external memory card support, the range of options certainly come as a necessity rather than a luxury. The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 provides only two options for internal storage – 16 and 32 GB. However, since there is a microSD card slot that will accept up to 64 GB, it is possible to expand the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1’s memory at any stage.
Featuring only a 3.15 megapixel camera that can record only HD videos, the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 loses out to the iPad Mini 2 in the camera aspect. The iPad Mini 2 features a five megapixel camera with the likes of autofocus, touch focus, face detection, HD, and full HD video recording features. Apple has been giving its devices some of the best cameras and this trend continues in the iPad Mini 2 as well.
iPads have always been at the forefront of excellent performance on a tablet and this aspect changes let alone the iPad Mini 2. Despite using only a dual core 1.3 GHz processor, which is at a slower clock speed than the dual core 1.6 GHz processor on the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, the iPad Mini 2 is able to offer almost similar levels of performance to its bigger cousin. The device comes with the A7 chip, one of the latest in Apple’s range. The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, meanwhile, uses the cheaper version of Intel’s processors from the Atom range to power the android 4.2 operating system.
The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 is priced at just $299 compared to the $350 price commanded by the iPad Mini 2.
