HTC One M8 vs Samsung Galaxy S5 vs LG G3 vs Xperia Z2 – Top Specifications and Price Comparison

This is a comparison between the most popular flagships in 2014, the G3 being the latest one coming to the market. These smartphones have many features in common, only their cameras and batteries are different. But let’s compare all of them and after that, maybe you’ll decide to invest your money on one of them. But keep in mind that they’re not cheap!

Design and Dimensions

The G3, likewise its predecessor, has the hardware buttons placed on the rear panel, but they don’t look bulky anymore. In descending order of screen sizes, the LG flagship wins this category thanks to its 5.5inches True HD-IPS + LCD display which supports a resolution of 1440x2560pixels (the highest among the others) and 534ppi (the biggest). It’s followed by the Xperia Z2, with its 5.2inches Triluminos IPS LCD display which uses X-Reality Engine technology to offer an incredible user experience. This screen is capable of supporting a pixel density of 424ppi. Next, we have the S5 with a 5.1inches Super AMOLED screen that supports 432ppi, and lastly, the One M8 ends this list with the 5inches Super LCD3 display which supports 441ppi. But these three smartphones have a resolution of 1080x1920pixels.

As for the weights, we can consider the S5 the lightest, because it weights 145grams, being followed by the G3 – 149grams, the One M8 – 160grams and Xperia Z2 – 163 grams.

The S5 is also the slimmest – 8.1mm, while the One M8 is the thickest – 9mm. The G3 is the widest – 74.6mm and the One M8 is the narrowest – 70.6.

The G3, S5 and One M8 have their screens protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, while the Xperia Z2 has a shatter proof glass on top of its display. But this phone and the S5 are the only dust and water resistant phones, and the Samsung device comes also with a fingerprint sensor.

Hardware and OS

All three smartphones come with the same Quad-core Krait 400 processor, but the clock speed of the G3, S5 and the One M8 variant for Asia are clocked at 2.5GHz, while the Xperia Z2 and the US/EMEA variant of the One M8 have their processors clocked at 2.3GHz. All four devices are equipped the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipsets, but the G3 and the S5 benefit from the latest MSM8974AC series, while the other two phones have the MSM8974AB series.

The G3 has two combinations of RAM + ROM: 2GB of RAM + 16GB of internal storage or 3GB of RAM + 32GB of internal storage, and both internal memories are expandable up to 128GB. The Xperia Z2 has also 3GB of RAM, but 16GB of internal storage, with the possibility to expand it up to 128GB. The rest of the smartphones have 2GB of RAM and are accompanied with two variants of internal memories, 16 and 32GB, both being expandable up to the same capacity of 128GB.

The operating system is the same on all four devices, Android OS, v4.4.2 (KitKat), but only the One M8 received the 4.4.3 (KitKat) update. Also, all of these smartphones are using their companies’ UI on top.

Cameras

The smartphones with the highest camera resolution is the Xperia Z2, which sports a 16MP rear camera, has the G sensor, autofocus and LED flash. Next, there’s the S5 with its 16MP rear camera with features such as phase detection, LED flash, autofocus dual shot etc. The G3 is on the third position with its 13MP rear camera with phase detection/laser autofocus, dual-LED flash and optical image stabilization and lastly the One M8 has a Dual 4Ultrapixel rear camera, which can’t shoot 4K videos like the other three smartphones. But the good news is that it has the best secondary camera of 5MP, while the rest of the devices have 2.2MP (S5 and Xperia Z2) and 2.1MP (G3).

Batteries

The device with the biggest battery is on the Xperia Z2, which is Li-Ion 3200mAh, being followed by the G3 with a Li-Ion 3000mAh battery, the S5 has a Li-Ion 2800mAh battery and the One M8 has a Li-Po 2600mAh battery. But the Xperia Z2 and the One M8 have non-removable batteries.
