Samsung Galaxy S3 vs. Nexus 4 – Samsung up Against Google

The Galaxy S3 from Samsung was one of the very popular phones of 2012, but both the S3 and the Nexus 4 are considered to be two of the best Android phones.

Though the specifications of both the phones are almost similar, the Nexus 4 is much cheaper.

Size, Display and Dimensions

Both the phones have similar dimensions. The Nexus 4 is smaller at 69 x 134 mm, whereas the S3 is slightly bigger at 71 x 137 mm. The S3 is thinner than the Nexus 4 at 8.6 mm compared to the 9.1 mm of the Nexus 4. The S3 is also lighter than the Nexus 4 at 133g, compared to 139g of the Nexus 4.

The screen size of the Nexus 4 is slightly smaller at 4.7 inches, whereas the S3 has a slightly bigger screen of 4. 8 inches, though the difference is not noticeable. The S3 makes use of the Super AMOLED screen technology, whereas the Nexus 4 has an IPS display. Google’s Nexus 4 has a better screen resolution of 768 x 1280p with a pixel density of 320 ppi. Samsung’s S3 comes with a resolution of 720 x 1280 and a lower pixel density of 306 ppi. However, both the screens offer a good quality display.

Hardware and Memory Specs

The internal components of the both the devices are almost the same, with the Nexus 4 powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro, a 1.5 GHz, quad core processor and a RAM of 2 GB. On the other hand, the S3 comes with an exynos 4 quad core chip Quad 1.4 GHz and a RAM of 1 GB.

As for storage capacity, the Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with better storage options of 16 GB, 32GB and 64 GB versions. On the other hand, the Nexus 4 comes in only two models, namely, the 8 GB and the 16 GB models. The S3 has, in addition a microSD card slot, which offers an additional storage of 64 GB.

Camera Specs

However, both the phones come with a rear camera of 8 MP and are capable of recording video of a full HD 1080p. However, the S3 comes with a better front camera resolution of 2.9 MP, whereas the Nexus 4 has a lower resolution of 1.3 MP. Both the devices are capable of shooting videos at a resolution of 720p.

Connectivity Options

Both the phones also offer similar connectivity options, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS, NFS and offer wireless charging. There is no 4G-connectivity for the Nexus 4, whereas the S3 comes with a 4 G LTE feature.

OS Features

Both the phones run on the Android OS, with the Nexus 4 coming with the latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean version. The S3 has also been updated to the same 4.1 Jelly Bean version. The Nexus 4 comes with some extra features, such as widgets for lock screen, gesture typing features and a Photo Sphere. Samsung has added its own skin to Android through the TouchWiz overlay. This adds some features to the S3, such as the Direct Call and the S Voice as well as the Pop Up, Smart Alert and so on, whereas Google’s Nexus 4 uses the regular Android interface.

Battery Comparison

Both the smartphones have a capacity of 2100 mAh, but the battery of the S3 is removable, whereas that of the Nexus 4 is not accessible.

Verdict

The Nexus 4 scores in its competitive price and its stock Android features as well as quick updates. It also comes with a Gorilla Glass 2 on the back and has an attractive pattern. On the other hand, the S3 has a better camera and a Super AMOLED screen with a ratio of 16:9. Storage options are better and it has a microSD card slot.
