Many predict that Nokia would have not fallen into hard times had they embraced android much earlier than the likes of Samsung and HTC.
Android and iOS have emerged as the main operating systems in the smartphone era. However, Nokia largely persisted with the Symbian initially, and later moved on to the Windows OS. The Nokia Lumia devices have been hugely successful using the Windows OS– although nowhere near enough the success of its android rivals. The Nokia X is the first device from the company to adopt the android OS.
Design
The Lumia 520 uses the conventional Windows operating system that made its appearance in several Lumia phones to date. In terms of design, it sticks in line with the traditional approach from Nokia. However, it remains one of the best designed products in this segment. It also uses high quality materials. The Nokia X may not adhere to the excellent standards set by the Lumia 520, but it is not poor by any standards.
Operating System
The Nokia X is not a phone that runs entirely on the android operating system. Instead, Nokia provides a system that uses the open source version of this popular operating system. Since it is not the android version provided by Google, it lacks in many of the Google apps like YouTube, Google maps, and Play Store by default. However, the device does come with the ability to install them after purchase. Therefore, one has to rely upon the Nokia store in order to get popular applications.
Apps
The Lumia 520 cannot match the superior advantage of the android app ecosystem. It relies upon the apps on the Windows store, which has been growing at a rapid pace in recent years. However, it has most of the popular apps found in the android store, which would be more than enough for many. The operating system will be shown on a 4 inch display that supports 480 x 800 pixels of resolution. Multitouch works on both devices, although the Nokia X can support only up to 2 fingers. Both devices use the IPS panel for better contrast ratio.
Camera
Despite being an entry-level smartphone, the Nokia X offers a 3.15 megapixel camera with features like panorama and face detection. However, there is no front facing camera and the video recording is also limited to only 480p. The five megapixel camera on the Lumia 520 is much superior in terms of quality, while it can also record HD videos as well. Both phones are well-equipped in terms of connectivity, but Lumia 520 supports slightly faster versions of features like Bluetooth.
Since both phones come with a battery rated around 1500 mAh, they offer excellent talk times even with this large display. They come in different colors like yellow, white, and black.
The Nokia X is an entry-level smartphone that retails at around $140, while the Lumia 520 is slightly cheaper at around $120.
