Micromax Canvas Knight A350 vs. Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 – Pricing and Specifications Compared

Indian manufacturer Micromax has been growing by leaps and bounds over the last few years, especially in the smartphone segment.

One of the disadvantages for new companies, trying to overtake established names like Samsung, has been the operating system. The availability of Android for all has enabled Micromax, to provide comparable specifications at a cheaper cost in most cases. The Canvas Knight A350 is one of the latest devices on the market from the company. Samsung, meanwhile, has been trying to improve the reach of the Galaxy Note series with phones like the Galaxy Mega 5.8.

Design

The design of the Galaxy Mega 5.8 is not a significant shift from the plethora of Samsung phones that have been launched in the last 12 months. This phone came out in May 2013. Despite being almost 12 months old, it is not an outdated design by any means. The Canvas Knight A350, meanwhile, came out only a few months ago and it marks a remarkable improvement in quality, compared to the previous phones from Micromax.

Display

The Canvas Knight A350 features a large 5 inch display that comes with full HD resolution. Micromax offers the IPS panel in the phone, like several other high-end manufacturers. Hence, there is no compromise in terms of viewing angles and contrast ratios. The full HD resolution provides a great pixel density of 441 PPI. The Galaxy Mega 5.8 loses out quite badly in this regard since it features only 190 PPI pixel density. This is because of the significantly larger 5.8 inch display, which uses only 540 x 960 pixels. Comparatively, this is the same resolution present on the iPhone 4S with its 3.5 inch display. This screen is strictly for those who primarily demand a large display.

Internal Memory

Micromax takes a huge leap forward by offering 32 GB of internal memory as standard. This is a substantial advantage compared to the 8 GB of internal memory offered by the Galaxy Mega 5.8. However, the Samsung phone redeems itself by offering external memory card support. This is a feature absent on the Micromax phone.

Processor

Performance is healthy on the Galaxy Mega 5.8 due to its dual core 1.4 GHz processor that is required to run the android 4.2 jellybean operating system. Due to the presence of 1.5 GB of RAM, which is substantially more than some of the previous high end phones from Samsung, it will be able to support multitasking quite easily. However, such performance figures are easily overtaken by those of the Canvas Knight A350. This phone comes with an octa core processor rated at 1.7 GHz. It also comes with the latest Android 4.4 operating system.

Battery

Battery life is comparable on both devices with a 12 hour medium usage offered by both these phones. The Canvas Knight A350 has a 2350 mAh battery compared to the 2600 mAh battery on the Galaxy Mega 5.8. The Canvas Knight A350 is available for about $320 with the Galaxy Mega 5.8 also priced similarly.
