Mastering Google Maps – Experience Technology Like Never Before

If there are any tech apps everyone should be thankful for, mapping and navigation apps should be on top of the list.

Before the invention of these apps, one had to print out pages of maps for directions or settle for having to ask for directions. Today, you can get to any location by simply using Google maps. While there are many options when it comes to maps and navigation apps, Google maps remains amongst the most popular.

With Google maps, one can do more than just find directions. This article highlights some tricks and tips you can use when using Google maps.

Zooming in and out

There are a few easy tricks that can help you zoom in and out on the go. These can be done using just one hand and are ideal for mobile Google maps apps.

You can save a few clicks for voice navigation by pressing the ‘hold transportation’ icon situated on the screens’ bottom right side after you have entered your destination or tapped it on the map. Once this is done, Google maps will immediately start spouting off the directions. While this may not be useful if you want to view routing options, it can come in handy if you are looking to save time.

For you to zoom in and out of Google maps, you can use the pinch-to-zoom mode. However, in times when you do not have both hands free, you can simply double tap on the screen and hold it on the second tap. Drag your finger downwards to zoom in and upwards to zoom out.

Saving maps on tablet or phone for use on offline mode

Smartphones can at times fail to deliver when you need them to. There are times when you may need to use Google maps in a place with no internet connection. With android apps or iOS, you can download Google maps for viewing even when offline. All you have to do is to zoom in on the area you want to view when you are in a place with internet connection. Type “ok maps” in the search box, you will receive a message on the bottom of the screen saying “on screen mapped cached”. It may take some time for large map areas. After doing this, you will still be able to view the map using the offline map when you open Google maps in areas with no internet connection. With GPS still working, you can see your position on the map. This offline map feature is a good idea if you want to avoid the data roaming costs when abroad.

Searching for flights

It is possible to use Google maps to search for flights using your desktop app. All you have to do is to enter the starting point and your destination. You will get “see results on Google flights” as your option. If you do not get this option, you can click on the 3 dots appearing on the toolbar at the top to find more transportation options. Choose the airplane option followed by clicking on “see results on Google flights”.

Selecting these options takes you to a page where you can choose your travel dates and view the available flights. You can filter by price, airline, time and more.
