iPhone 5S vs. Samsung Galaxy S5 – Giving a Tough Competition

Apple’s iPhone 5S can offer a tough competition to the Samsung Galaxy S5, as the former is the finest of smartphones released by Apple.

Design Comparison

Apple’s iPhone 5S has a chassis of metal and glass and is compact, being easily operable with a single hand. The Touch ID fingerprint feature of the iPhone 5S offers the latest technology compared to the swipe technology used in the S5. On the other hand, Samsung’s S5 is water resistant and offers a heart rate monitor feature on the back. The S5 from Samsung is 8.1 mm in thickness and is also heavier and bigger when compared to the iPhone 5S.

Apple is a company that is design driven and it shows in its devices. The iPhone 5S has a design almost similar to the iPhone 5 and offers a high end phone feel and look, whereas the S5 comes with a faux leather or plastic finish. Even the edge of the S5 is made of plastic, even though it offers a metallic look. The iPhone 5S surely offers a more premium feel. However, the finish of the S5 is very comfortable and offers a soft touch.

Display Comparison

Samsung’s device has a 5.1 inches screen with a resolution of 1080pixels and comes in different colors. The Super AMOLED technology is used for the S5 screen and offers excellent brightness to the screen. However, the iPhone 5S comes with a 4 inches display and a resolution of 640 x 1136, offering the same level of brightness. Both the devices offer good viewing angles, but the S5 has a higher ppi when compared to the iPhone 5S.

Hardware, Processor Comparison

Samsung’s S5 is powered by a Snapdragon 801 chip and is combined with a quad core processor of 2.5 GHz. This is paired with a 2GB RAM. On the other hand, the iPhone 5S is powered by the A7 64 bit chip, which is the first of its kind in the industry and is combined with a RAM of 1 GB. The internal memory storage of the iPhone 5S is 16GB, which is the same as that of the S5. However, the S5 comes with an external memory card slot for expanding memory.

Camera Comparison

The iPhone 5S and the Samsung S5 offer excellent camera features. The S5 is able to take great shots at a resolution of 16 MP, compared to the 8 MP camera of the iPhone 5S. This is useful when you are blowing up shots to higher proportions. However, the S5 camera takes a few seconds to fire up and get ready to shoot, whereas the iPhone camera can fire up from the lock screen in a matter of 2 seconds or so. The iPhone 5S comes with a dual LED flash, offering more color and balance, whereas this feature is lacking in the S5 camera. The S5 offers a feature for blurring the background and this is quite a nice feature, whereas this shooting mode is lacking in the iPhone 5S. The water resistance feature is a killer feature of the S5 camera. In addition, the S5 has a rating of IP67 so you can soak it in 3.3 feet of water for half an hour, provided the covers and the battery are covered. You cannot do this with your iPhone 5S.
Verdict

The S5 runs on the Android OS, the 4.4 KitKat versions and offers plenty of functionalities and features. The iPhone 5S runs on Apple’s iOS 7 and is very user friendly. The processors in both the devices are very fast and they have a good display. They offer excellent user interface experiences and an app experience that is lag-free. Samsung S5, however, offers many additional features, whereas the iPhone 5S offers a slimmer and more compact chassis.
