How to Back Up WhatsApp Messages and Media on iPhone

Text messaging is one of the main activities one does on the smartphone, and a lot of people prefer free messaging to free calling.

A very popular messaging app that has made headlines the past few months is WhatsApp. It was acquired by the social media giant, Facebook, for a dizzying $19 billion. It was also announced that the app will now soon have free calling feature, which all of its users will enjoy. While it is free to download and free to use for the first year, WhatsApp charges its users $1 annually after the initial year.

Collects $1 per Year

It may seem not enough for a successful messaging app like WhatsApp. However, the developers don’t seem to want much from their users. Sure, you can download similar apps for free but they don’t come without ads, which is something that makes WhatsApp stand out more. For more than $450 million active users, a measly price of $1 is worth paying for, so long as you are not bombarded with ads.

Hold on to Past Messages

If you love sending text messages more than calling your friends, then it’s safe to say that you’re a sentimental person. You probably have thousands of messages stored in WhatsApp account that you can’t get rid of because each message holds a memory that you simply don’t want to erase. We get it. Fortunately, there is a way for you to back up your messages in WhatsApp without much trouble. This feature is what users have been waiting for in a long time – whether they are messages from your friends, or message your long-time crush sent you, or a string of messages from your partner that you’ve been saving to read later.

Save Messages and Media

If you’re using an iPhone, saving previous messages and other media from WhatsApp such as photos and videos is easy. You can easily back up these media, including voice messages, using iCloud. On the settings of WhatsApp, simply tap the Chat Settings, followed by the Chat Backup. You will have the option to start backing up by tapping the “Back Up Now”, or you can manually select WhatsApp to automatically back up. You can choose to back up daily, weekly, or monthly.

Connect to a Wi-Fi

It is advisable that you do this when you’re connected to a Wi-Fi, otherwise, it will start using your data plan because backups can consume huge megabytes, especially if you’re an active WhatsApp user. To avoid extra data costs, disable cellular data for iCloud. Also, make sure that your iPhone is plugged in when backing up.

What if I Bought a New iPhone?

If you’re going to change your iPhone and want to use your old WhatsApp account, you can very well do so. When you install WhatsApp on your new iPhone, you can restore WhatsApp from a backup. All your contacts, all the messages, photos, videos, and voice messages you backed up will be restored if you’re using the same iCloud account.
