Facebook – Getting Started with the Mobile App

Accessing Facebook on Mobile

You will have to download the application from the App store or the market place on your device. Some phones even come with Facebook App pre-installed in it. Once you have installed it, you will have to create a Facebook account with a user name and a password. Set up your profile giving details of your hobbies or hometown; your picture, where you studied, where you are working and so on. In case you already have a Facebook account, you just need to sign in with your username and password. Facebook is available for almost all the operating systems and devices in the market, such as Android, iOS, Blackberry and Windows Phones and so on. The Facebook app can also be installed on tablets.

Facebook’s mobile application offers all the links of the site’s features in a small and convenient screen. The screen contains links to Friends; Messages; Profile; News Feed; Places; Notifications and so on. By clicking on Notifications, you can find out if someone has tagged you or written on your wall or posted a photo and so on.

Viewing Notifications and News Feed

The News Feed is a popular link, as this is where users can find the social aspect of the networking site. On the upper right of the News Feed page, you will find a button for Top News. This enables selection from options, such as Top News; Most Recent; Status Updates; Photos and a lot more. At the bottom, you can select the groups that you belong to for seeing updates related to these groups. It is also easy to create a starred list of your friends or those with whom you often hang out with or whom you interact with on a regular basis.

Updating Status

Users can easily update their status by clicking on the text box found on the top of the screen, saying ‘What’s on your Mind’. You can type anything you want and even upload photos from the device by clicking on the icon near the status bar. When you click on the comments, you can read what others have to say about a post. The small plus sign on the right of the screen can be used for commenting on other posts or for liking a post. Touch the back button on the phone to get back to News Feed.

Photos and Places

If you want to view your friends’ photos, you can click on one of their photos in a post. This will take you to the usual slideshow against a black background, similar to the Facebook website on the desktop. The back button takes you back to the News Feed.

The Places feature allows you to check in from your current location. By clicking on the Check in on the Places, the GPS feature of the phone is activated and it offers a list of places that are close to the current location of the user.

Tagging Friends

It is not possible, however, to tag friends from the Facebook mobile application. In case of the website on your desktop, when you type @ followed by the friend’s name, the person gets tagged. They and others can click on the name and the person also receives a notification about the post and that they have been tagged in it. You can still type @ followed by the person’s name, but it does not tag the person officially, though they receive a notification.

Mobile Privacy

Facebook also offers online privacy features. Users can change their privacy settings similar to the way they do it on the regular website on their desktops. Go to Privacy Settings and click on the Change to make the necessary changes, regarding who is allowed to see your posts and so on.
