Surface Pro 2 vs. Surface Pro 3 – Comparing Features and Specifications

The first tablet launched by Microsoft in the year 2012 showed great promise.

However, there were some serious problems with Windows RT including the severe app problem. Beyond the problem areas, the tablet was priced exorbitantly high. The keyboard attachment was yet another wrinkle that required ironing. Despite the cited problems, the tablet is popular in terms of its hardware design. The sleek slate had little life in the market due to high-end price tag and a disappointing battery life. Microsoft was not the company to back down due to a minor obstacle. The company launched Surface Pro 2 and Surface Pro 3 in the market.

The Surface Pro 2 is a more noteworthy upgrade for one major reason. The exterior may be the same as that of its predecessors, considering the design is fantastic. The specifications may also be similar, to a major extent. The big news is the state of the art Intel fourth gen Core i5 ‘Haswell’ CPU. The tablet computer also has some improvements done to its battery life to make it last 75% longer than its predecessor.

The Surface Pro 3, manufactured and marketed by Microsoft is aimed to position as a no-compromise PC that can be doubled up as a tablet. The company promises up to 9hrs of battery life, making it approximately 10% better than the battery life of its predecessor. Let us compare the two for their features, specifications and price.

Design, Dimensions, Display

The Surface Pro 2 has design based on the lines of Surface Pro I. This sleek tablet computer has dimensions measuring 6.81 inches in height, 10.81 inches in width and 0.5315 inches in thickness. The tablet computer incorporates 10.6 inches of HD screen with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. It has a 1.2 MP front and rear camera. The device weighs just 900gms.

The Surface Pro 3 also bears the same design as that of Surface Pro I. This tablet computer measures 7.93 inches in height, 11.5 inches in width and 0.36 inches in thickness. The device encompasses 12 inches of HD screen having a resolution of 2160×1440 pixels. This tablet computer has a 5 MP front and rear camera. The Surface Pro 3 weighs just 800gms.

Hardware and Software

The Samsung Pro 2 is powered with Intel i5 dual core 1.9 GHz processor with a RAM of 4GB or 8GB. The device has an internal storage of 64, 128, 256 and 512 GB and a microSD card reader. The tablet computer runs on Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit operating system.

The Surface Pro 3 is powered with Intel Haswell dual core low-power processor with 4GB or 8GB of RAM. The tablet computer has an internal storage of 64, 128, 256 and 512 GB and a microSD card reader expandable up to 128 GB. The tablet computer runs on Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit operating system, similar to its predecessor.

Price

The price range for Surface Pro 2 starts from $899 and goes up to $1799; whereas the price range of Surface Pro 3 starts from $799 and goes up to $1949.

These tablet computers are overpriced for their features and specifications. This could be an obstacle for Microsoft.
