Sony Xperia Z2 Specs, Features and Price – Shoot 4K Video

The Sony Xperia Z2 is the latest flagship device from Sony following the Z1. The phone retains the full HD display with the quad-core processor and a magnificent 20.7 MP camera. It is also completely waterproof, just like the Z1.

So What’s New?

The Z2 comes with a bigger screen display of 5.2 inches. The Qualcomm processor clocking at 2.3 GHz is slightly faster. It also runs on the latest version of Android 4.4.2 KitKat. To top it, the camera is capable of capturing 4K video recordings.

Design and Display Specs

It is very similar to the Z1 with a glass front and aluminum banding on the edges. It gives a premium feel while holding. It is suggested you keep it in a case, as it is vulnerable to scratches. It is completely waterproof with a rating of IP55 and IP58, so you can duck it in 1.5 meters of water for about thirty minutes. It is also very sturdy and you can take the device for underwater shooting. When it is wet, you cannot use the screen tapping features; instead, use the shutter button on the camera for snorkeling pictures.

The 5.2 inches screen comes with a resolution of 1920 x 1080p and a ppi of 424. The IPS technology offers crisp pictures and text and HD pictures. The Triluminous technology used in Bravia televisions has been used, making pictures vivid and vibrant with great viewing angles. You can also tweak the colors in the settings, though the automatic mode looks very natural.

Hardware and OS features

The Sony Xperia Z2 comes with the latest version of Android OS 4.4.2 KitKat. Sony has, of course, added its tweaks. So apart from the usual multiple homescreens, an application tray and a multitasking window, you also have an application menu that can be customized. You can also access Sony’s Video Gallery and Music and other subscription services. Settings can be adjusted with additional themes to change the interface.

A Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, quad-core, which is clocked at 2.3 GHz, powers the device. This is combined with a RAM of 3 GB, so it offers a very strong performance without any lags and delays when opening applications. It is also able to handle demanding games very smoothly.

Camera Specs

The rear camera is rated at 20.7 MP. However, you cannot use the auto mode, the scene modes or the HDR modes at the 20 MP resolution; it comes down to 8 MP for these modes. The full resolution pictures are excellent and offer good detail. The automatic mode might take some time getting used to, for getting the right balance and exposure. The camera also comes with many creative modes, such as a background defocussing feature, panorama view and so on. The interface is simple and there is no delay.

Capturing 4K Video

This is one big trick up its sleeve, as it is able to capture 4K Video. The clarity and resolution is great, though it might not be suitable for professional photographers. The colors are realistic and it is able to handle movement very well and captures good detail.

Verdict

The Sony Xperia Z2 offers a great performance with a stunning display and an amazing camera. It offers the latest Android OS in a gorgeous waterproof design. The all round performance is excellent, but it comes at a hefty price of around $1000. If you already have the previous Z1, it is not worth the upgrade. However, those having an older Android device would do well to get their hands on the new top of the line device from Sony.
