Samsung Galaxy S5 Active – Rugged Version Of Galaxy S5

The S5 from Samsung Galaxy was released in February 2014. It came with some amazing specs and excellent software and hardware features. It was, in fact, one of the top-selling smartphones all over the world. On the other hand, the Galaxy S5 Active was announced in June 2014. It is considered to be a more rugged version of the S5. In addition, the S5 Active is also offered in other shades, namely ruby-red, camo green and titanium grey.

Design and Display

The Samsun Galaxy S5 comes with a screen display size of 5.5 inches and uses the Super AMOLED screen technology. The screen is super clear with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 p. On the other hand, the S5 Active is expected to have a smaller screen size of 5.1 inches, but using the same AMOLED technology and same display resolution. The pixel density of both the phones is also the same at 432 ppi.

The S5 weighs 145g and is 0.32 inches in thickness, whereas the S5 Active will be around 0.35 inches in thickness and weighs around 170g, as it is more rugged. Both the phones are dust and water-resistant, but the S5 Active is also shock resistant, making it more rugged. The S5 Active comes with certifications of IP 67 and MIL STD 810G as well. The buttons used on the S5 Active are physical ones that are sturdier.

Software and Hardware Specs

Both the S5 and the S5 Active run on a quad-core Krait 400, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, which clocks at 2.5 GHz. This is combined with a RAM of 2 GB in both the mobile sets. The software on the both the devices is the latest Android version of 4.4.2 KitKat, which is combined with Samsung’s user interface TouchWiz.

Camera Specs

The two devices have a rear or primary camera of 16 MP, which comes with LED flash. Both the phones also have a front camera of 2 MP resolution. The two cameras offer video recording (4K video) at a resolution of 3840 x 2160p.

Battery and Storage

The two smartphones come with a battery capacity of 2800 mAh. The S5 offers 21 hours of talktime, with a standby time of about 390 hours. On the other hand, the S5 Active is more rugged and offers 29 hours of talktime and a standby time of about 480 hours.

Special Features

The S5 Active will also feature a special convenience key on the side of the mobile set. When you press this key, it activates the Active Zone application. This brings in features, such as the stopwatch, the flashlight and the barometer as well as the compass and much more to the home screen. The Home key is a hard key on the S5 original and the Back and the Task Switcher keys are soft keys. On the other hand, the S5 Active, being a more rugged version, has hard keys for all these three buttons. The S5 original comes with a fingerprint sensor, whereas this is lacking in the S5 Active. Both the phones offer support for NFC, as far as connectivity specs are concerned.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is offered at around US$700 and the S5 Active is expected to be around the same.
