Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini vs S5 Mini – Comparison of Specifications and Pricing

The miniature versions of the top end devices have become a great number churner for companies like Samsung and Sony.

Samsung first started this trend with the Galaxy S3 Mini a few years ago. It has continued with subsequent versions. The Galaxy S4 Mini is the last official device to mimic most of the features of the high-end phones apart from the screen and the memory. After the recent success of the Galaxy S5, it looks like the company is preparing to launch the Galaxy S5 Mini in the next few weeks.

Design

The official pictures of the Galaxy S5 Mini are not available yet, but it is highly expected that the device will not be a major deviation from the Galaxy S5 in terms of design. This has been the case with the Galaxy S4 Mini, which almost looks similar to its bigger counterpart.

Features

A major feature that is expected to be carried over from the Galaxy S5 is the fingerprint sensor. Even though it may not have received the best of reviews, this is certainly a feature that will be a standout aspect at this price point. The Galaxy S5’s fingerprint sensor was finally compared with the similar feature on the iPhone 6. However, the Galaxy S5 Mini’s fingerprint sensor will have almost no competition in this segment. Hence, it is likely to be received very well. The same also applies to the dust and water resistance.

Unlike the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, the Galaxy S5 Mini will be able to boast of better IP certification.

Display

The Galaxy S4 Mini primarily achieved its cost reduction by reducing the display to 4.3 inches. The Galaxy S5 Mini is set to reduce the display from 5.1 inches to 4.5 inches. The resolution will also be 720p compared to the full HD on the flagship device. In order to protect the display, the Galaxy S5 Mini will be using the third-generation gorilla glass display.

Memory

In order to justify the changing times, the Galaxy S5 Mini is set to come with 16 GB internal memory as a standard. This is a substantial bump up from the 8 GB that was featured on the Galaxy S4. Even though both devices support external memory cards, the Galaxy S5 Mini has an advantage out of the box. This improved memory is likely to be used at storing the pictures taken using the eight megapixel camera, which is almost identical in terms of specifications to the camera found on the Galaxy S4 Mini.

Camera

One difference in the camera department is the use of 2.1 megapixel front facing camera compared to the 1.9 megapixel front facing camera of the Galaxy S4 Mini. The Galaxy S5 Mini supports full HD video recording as well.

The factory unlocked version of the Galaxy S4 Mini will cost around $300. Given the substantial improvement in certain features, the Galaxy S5 Mini is expected to be in the region of $420. The expected release date is in Q2, 2014.
