Nexus 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S4 – Comparison of Specs and Features

The Samsung Galaxy S4 was the best selling Android smartphone for the year 2013.

However, this does not mean that it is the best smartphone. An array of smartphones in the market would give a competitive edge to the Samsung Galaxy S4. Among the many top rivals, the Google Nexus 5, a smartphone manufactured and marketed by LG Electronics, would be compared for specs and features herein. The Nexus 5 may not be as expensive as the Galaxy S4 but it is truly the best Android smartphone around, as claimed by the company. Let us see how the Nexus 5 holds up against the Galaxy S4.

Design, Dimensions, Display

The Nexus 5 and the Galaxy S4 may have different approaches when it comes to design; however, both the smartphones have a plastic body. The Google Nexus 5 comes in a simple matt black design. The device feels better in hand. On the other hand, the Galaxy S4 comes in a glassy plastic design.

The weight of both these smartphones is similar, weighing 130 grams. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is just 7.9mm in thickness and it is thinner than the Nexus 5, having a thickness of 8.6mm.

The Nexus 5 has a non-removable cover that gives it a solid feel than the Galaxy S4. However, the Galaxy S4 comes with a microSD card slot under the battery cover unlike the Nexus 5.

Both these smartphones come with evenly matched touchscreens. The Nexus 5 has a 4.95 inches True HD IPS touchscreen; whereas, the Galaxy S4 has a 5 inches Super AMOLED touchscreen. The resolutions are also the same at 1080×1920 pixels. However, the difference lies where the IPS screens make use of standard lighting and the AMOLED screens use light emitting pixels. The latter caters the user with better contrast in dim-lit rooms.

Hardware and Software

The Nexus 5 is powered with Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.3GHz quad core processor. The smartphones run on Android OS v4.4 KitKat operating system, upgradable to v4.4.4 KitKat.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is powered with Exynos 5 Octa 1.6GHz quad core Cortex-A 15 processor. The device runs on Android OS v4.2.2 (Jelly Bean), upgradable to v4.4.2 KitKat.

Price

The Nexus 5 is priced at $399.99; whereas, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is priced at $439.99.

Despite a drop in the price of the Galaxy S4, the Nexus 5 is considerably cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy S4. The Galaxy S4 caters you with faster processor, better software, comparable screen and a pleasing design. All these features make the Samsung Galaxy S4 a better value option.
