iPhone 5 vs. iPhone 5S –  The Next Generation Phone

The iPhone 5 was released in November 2012, whereas the iPhone 5S was released the next year, in September 2013. The 5S was the first Apple phone with the 64-bit processor. It is faster than the iPhone 5 and also has a better camera, offering many features lacking in the iPhone 5.

The iPhone 5 is now a discontinued model and cannot be bought from the online Apple Store. The iPhone 5S is naturally more expensive at around $700, when compared to the iPhone 5, 16GB, for around $500.

Design Comparison

Both the 5S and the 5 are 7.6 mm thick and weigh 112 g. They have toughened glass fronts and an aluminum rear. The design is almost the same, with superb build and quality.

Both the phones are comfortable in a single hand. The only difference in design is that the home button in the 5S comes with a metallic ring around it, due to the fingerprint scanner feature, the Touch ID, which is absent in the iPhone 5.

As for colors, the iPhone 5 comes in black or slate and white or sliver. The 5S comes in white or silver, gold; and in space grey.

Touch ID Sensor Features

This is the most obvious difference in hardware between the two phones. The iPhone 5S comes with the Touch ID sensor, which is actually a fingerprint scanner located beneath the home button.

You can unlock the phone easily without entering a passcode. You have to place your finger on the Home button to unlock it, after teaching it first to identify your selected finger. It works by using a capacitive scan of your finger.

You can also use the feature for purchasing apps from the iTunes.

Display

The iPhone 5 and the iPhone 5S have a screen display of 4 inches IPS and a resolution of 1136 x 640p and a ppi of 326. Both he phones offer excellent image quality and rich and accurate colors, contrasts and viewing angles.

Software/Hardware Comparison

Both the devices use the same iOS 7, though there are certain improvements in the hardware of the 5S. The OS offers a new design and improved screen transitions. It also comes with improved features compared to rival smartphones.

The iPhone 5 comes with a 32-bit dual core processor of 1.3 GHz, Apple A6, whereas the iPhone 5S comes with a 64 bit dual core, 1.3 GHz process, with Apple A7. Both the phones have a RAM of 1 GB. The iPhone 5S is much more powerful when compared to the older model.

The iPhone 5 also offers excellent visuals and graphics, but the 64-bit CPU enables quicker processing of data. The RAM in the iPhone 5S is also faster due to the type changing from the DDR2 in the 5 to the DDR3 in the 5S.

The GPU in the iPhone 5S is also more advanced and about two and half times quicker than that of the iPhone.

Additional Applications in the 5S

There are many apps that are offered optimized for the iPhone 5S. In addition, the Garageband software for music brings in 32 tracks for the iPhone 5S (and for other 64 bit devices). On the other hand, the iPhone 5 only has 16 tracks. The 64-bit processor will be offering abilities that will almost equal those of a PC.

In addition, the iPhone 5S offers the djay 2, which is a virtual application that can process 720p of video streaming at the same time offering a real time song transposition. The sketchbook mobile is a drawing application offering a larger canvas and brush, enabled by the 64-bit processor. The 5S also comes with a Fire 2 HD, offering additional lighting effects and a 3 dimensional space shooter.

Verdict

The Touch ID, the 64-bit processor and the extra apps are excellent upgrades on the iPhone 5S. It is truly a next generation phone.
