iPad Mini 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 – Pricing and Specifications Compared

The success of the iPad Mini has resulted in the second-generation device featuring even better specifications.

It will be going up against the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, which has been trying to close the gap on the iPad for a long time. However, with its latest device, it looks like Samsung appears to have hit the right spot.

Display

One of the main areas where the two devices can be separated quite easily is the screen size. Being a miniature version of the iPad, the iPad Mini 2 features only a 7.9 inch display. This is quite small in comparison with the 10.1 inch unit on the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1. However, Apple has proved once again that size is not everything since the iPad offers a far better resolution. It boasts of a pixel density closer to 350 PPI compared to the 180 PPI of the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1.

As a result, images look crisper and clearer on the iPad Mini 2 whereas, in some cases, pixels are visible on the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1.

Camera

Even though Samsung provides higher megapixel cameras on several devices in its range, the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 is not lucky enough to feature it. This device comes with only a 3.15 megapixel camera that is only average in terms of picture quality. Due to the lack of detail, it is also almost impossible to crack them. As far as the features go, it comes with 720p video recording as its primary feature. In this regard, the iPad Mini 2 is much better due to a five megapixel camera. It may not produce the most detailed images, but color reproduction and noise level reduction are extremely good.

Further, the camera also has full HD video recording capabilities. Shakes are almost eliminated from the video due to the video stabilization feature. The front facing 1.2 megapixel camera is capable of 720p video recording and it is essentially due to the support of FaceTime applications.

Processor

Unlike some of the Samsung products that use Snapdragon or Exynos processors, the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 comes with an Intel Atom processor that is rated at 1.6 GHz. Since it is a dual core processor, it is capable of running the android 4.2 version without much trouble. The presence of just 1 GB of RAM is likely to mean that the device may not receive future updates of the Android OS. Still, it is not like you’ll be losing out on a lot right now. The subsequent updates to the Android OS have not been significantly better and the 4.2 version will solve the need just about fine.

The biggest difference between the two devices comes with the price. Being an Apple device, it is not surprising to see the iPad Mini 2 start at around $400 for the 16 GB variant with only Wi-Fi connectivity. The top and model with Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity options comes at $829. This model features 128 GB of memory. The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 costs just $200.
