Surface Pro 2 vs Surface Pro 3 – Pricing and Specifications Compared

Microsoft’s presence in the tablet segment has been boosted by the launch of the Surface Pro 2 more than 12 months ago.

This device was not just a tablet since it was capable of being a replacement for the laptop. Such is the powerful nature of the product that it has become one of the successful sellers for Microsoft from the likes of Xbox. The Surface Pro 3 is the upcoming replacement for this device, as the company wants to expand its market share.

Design

The Surface Pro 3 is not expected to make drastic changes to the design of the Surface Pro 2, which captivated minds with its simplicity yet superior quality. The Surface Pro 2 may have come with very few physical buttons, but it was extremely easy-to-use thanks to the large touch screen display. Further, the powerful processor and the feature rich tablet enabled support to external keyboards unlike any other found in the market today.

Screen

The positive aspect of the Surface Pro 2 was the 10.6 inch display, which offered the ClearType Full HD display technology. The ClearType displays have been widely praised for their ability to increase legibility on the screen compared with its other counterparts. It also provided a full HD resolution, which has been announced for the last few years. However, the changing scenario in the display industry means that the Surface Pro 3 is likely to adopt the 4K technology.

This will massively increase the appeal of the device considering that none of the competitors in the tablet segment like the Apple iPad or any of the devices from Samsung’s tablet PC range come equipped with this feature.

Battery

A crucial aspect of the tablet PC has to be battery life since the device is fairly small enough to be carried everywhere such as mobile phones. However, unlike the mobile phone, it is not going to be used for making calls at a frequent rate. There may be times when the tablet may be sitting idle and it is vitally important that it maintains the battery life even during this period. Microsoft claims that the Surface Pro 2 will be capable of around 7 to 15 days on a single charge when it comes to standby times.

Further, it will be capable of charging up rather quickly in around 2 to 4 hours. This aspect could be improved only slightly given that the Surface Pro 2 is already one of the best in this regard.

Camera

The Surface Pro 2 comes with two cameras – in the front and the rear – that help expand the photographic skills and also act as a medium for video conferencing. Both cameras, though, will be able to support only the 720p HD videos. This may become a cumbersome feature in the latest era and hence the Surface Pro 3 may come with a 1080p supporting camera.

The Surface Pro 2 is one of the most expensive tablets around and the prices start at $ 899. The Surface Pro 3 is not going to be any cheaper and will start at $ 1000.
