The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 is a much newer mobile device, being released in February 2014, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S3 was released two years earlier in April 2012.
Both the phones function on the same Android 4.3 Jelly Bean OS version. When considering the price of the two devices, there is not much difference, with the S3 being available for around $310 ad the Grand 2 for approximately $322.
Screen and Display
The Galaxy Grand 2 has a bigger display screen of 5.25 inches compared to the smaller screen of 4.8 inches in case of the S3. However, the S3 has a better pixel density of 306 ppi, compared to the 280 ppi of the Grand 2. The display technology in the S3 is a Super AMOLED one, whereas TFT technology has been used in the display of the Grand 2. The S3 has a smaller display by 0.45 inches, but the screen is sharp and is 9% higher than that of the Grand 2. The Grand 2 weighs 163g whereas the S3 is lighter at 133g. The dimensions of the Grand 2 are 5.78 x 2.96 x 0/35 inches, whereas the S3 is a smaller phone at 5.38 x 2.78 x 0.34 inches.
Battery/Storage/Hardware Specs Comparison
The Grand 2 has a better battery capacity of 2600 mAh, whereas the S3 capacity is less at 2100 mAh. Both the devices, however, use the same Li Ion battery technology. The display is usually the major drainer of the battery in a phone, and the Grand 2 having a bigger screen drains the batter faster than the S3.
Considering the hardware specifications, the Galaxy S3 has a higher CPU speed of 1.4 GHz, whereas the Grand 2 is clocked at 1.2 GHz. On the other hand, the Grand 2 has a better RAM capacity of 1500 MB, with the S3 at 1024 MB. Both the cameras sport the same 8 MP rear camera and a 1.9 MP front camera, with the same resolution of 1080 p. But the S3 has many other camera options that are not present in the Grand 2, such as LED Flash, an Autofocus and Burst Mode and Digital Zoom. Both the devices have a front facing camera and a Panorama mode. In short, both the devices have decent cameras for capturing good quality pictures and can also record HD video, like any other high-end model phones.
The S3 has a higher internal storage of 16 GB, whereas the Grand 2 has an internal storage of 8 GB, with both phones being expandable up to 64 GB with the help of a microSD card. As far as connectivity is concerned, the S3 also offers NFC, which is lacking in the Grand 2. Both the devices support Bluetooth 4.0.
Verdict
If you consider factors of portability along with ease of use in a phone, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is a great choice between the two. It is lighter than the Grand 2 by about 18% and it is also slimmer. However, both the phones are less than 9 mm in thickness, which means that both are not bulky. However, the Grand 2 is more of a phablet and is a little wide, so it cannot be operated easily with a single hand, whereas this is not a problem with the S3. The S3 has excellent and high performing hardware features as well as software features. It is a top-end phone, with a slim design and a very good battery life as well as fast 4G speeds and intelligence.
