Nexus 7 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 – Pricing and Specifications Compared

The launch of the Nexus 7 2013 edition has been met with a lot of excitement because the device promises to offer plenty of high-end aspects at a cost around half as much as the iPad.

It will be competing against some of the products from Samsung’s range as well. One of them will be the third generation Galaxy Tab product featuring an 8 inch touch screen display, the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0.

Design

The Nexus 7 is not just a tool to provide the latest android operating system from Google. This device packs quite a punch and this is quite evident from the materials it uses. The iPad certainly sets the benchmark when it comes to quality, but the Nexus 7 is not far behind. This is a tremendous achievement considering that there is a wide price difference between the two products. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 certainly makes a lot of improvements in the quality aspect compared to the second-generation device, but it is a marginal loser to the Nexus 7 in this regard.

Display

The 7 inch display on the Nexus 7 is just about larger than the displays from some of the phone-tablets like the Galaxy Note 3. This may be an issue for some considering that tablets are largely meant to be entertainment devices. The Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is slightly better in this regard due to its 8 inch display, which offers both portability and decent screen size. The Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is better only in terms of screen size because its resolution of just 800 x 1280 pixels is nowhere near the 1200 x 1920 pixels offered by the Nexus 7. This resolution makes the Nexus 7 offer close to 350 PPI of pixel density.

Speakers

Google appears to have made the Nexus 7 oriented towards users looking for multimedia and entertainment from their device, since the company offers excellent speakers to go along with the high resolution display. Further, the speakers are positioned to be on either side of the device when it is held in portrait mode. This provides full immersive sound experience while watching movies. The Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 has slightly better sounding speakers since they support Dolby surround sound.

Camera

Camera is not a feature that these two tablets can boast of, but the fact that they are present makes it wonderful especially in the case of the Nexus 7. The price of this Google tablet is so low that the company was expected to do without camera, but the fact that it is present at all, makes it brilliant. Both devices have a five megapixel unit that comes loaded with features like autofocus and 720p video recording. There is also a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera thrown into the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, while the Nexus 7 features a 1.2 megapixel unit.

At just $225, the Nexus 7 is one of the cheapest tablets available today while the Samsung model is slightly pricier at $250.
