Gionee has announced its Elife S5.5 phone, which is being considered as the slimmest phone of the world. The company has brought handsets like the E6 and the E7 and now offers the S5.5. The phone offers a perfect combination of good design and performance at a reasonable price.
Build and Design
The new Elife S5.5 has exteriors of Gorilla Glass and aluminum alloy, with metal buttons and a premium feel, offering protection for flat drops as well. The gold and white variants are exceptionally pleasing, with premium design and rich finish.
As for the hardware of the device, it comes with a Mediatek 6592 Chipset and has 8 Cores at 1.7 GHz, a GPU of Mali450 MP4 variant. In addition, it offers a RAM of 2GB and a storage capacity of 16 GB and 32 GB variants. The primary camera has a sensor of 13 MP. The front camera has a sensor of 5 MP and can capture images at 1080p resolution. The battery capacity is a little low at 2300 mAh. However, the device is very slim and the battery value is quite high for this phone.
The Elife S5.5 is powered by the Android 4.2.2 OS out of the box. However, there is no news of any update to the Android KitKat, the 4.4 version. The new interface of Amigo 2.0 has been put on the Android OS. This is not a skinned version of Android, but rather a rebuilding of Android OS. It can be compared to the MIUI or the Cyanogen. This build makes the device much faster and even more responsive than the previous devices.
This feature also has a good effect on apps that you install on the phone, with a power booster and a performance booster preloaded in the device. The user can ban applications starting up on their own forcefully when you power the handset. This improves the capacity of the free RAM available to the user and it also enhances the performance of the device.
The mobile device is powerful and also very stable, capable of handling daily tasks and even some extreme tasks. There is good heat management as well, as there is no turbo variant in the MT6592 chipset. Gaming is very impressive and is lag free, with most games being compatible with the device out of the box and running smoothly. However, the audio is not loud enough. The screen is excellent with the dimples on the top and bottom offering a good grip while you hold the phone in landscape mode.
Camera Specs and Battery
The camera of the device does not have 4K video capturing capabilities, compared to the competition. The camera module is capable, but it cannot handle big video files. There is also no SD card slot. Colors as well as saturation are good and so are the white balance and the exposure. The images are very crisp and sharp with good auto-focusing features, even in case of close-ups. The video capturing can be done well without lags and the microphone is excellent too. The device has a front camera of 5 MP working effectively even in low light conditions offering good selfies.
It comes with unlocked capability for 3G. The networks are excellent with good noise cancellation built-in the phone. However, one cannot compare it to the devices of Samsung or Apple. There is actually nothing to complain regarding the phone aspect. Battery life is good, with a full day’s use even if you use it for 4 to 5 hours.
The Gionee Elife S5.5 goes to prove that even new players in the field can produce great devices. It offers a complete package, with a good build, a customized user interface and decent hardware and battery life. All this is offered at a reasonable price of around $500.
